Backup "centralizzato" con Xubuntu e Restore

Creare con regolarità delle copie di sicurezza dei documenti e dei progetti sui quali si sta lavorando è un'attività che non dovrebbe essere mai trascurata. Una delle soluzioni più interessanti consiste nell'allestire un server e dedicarlo alla gestione ed alla memorizzazione degli archivi di backup. In ambito aziendale va bene, allo scopo, qualsiasi sistema: non è quindi necessario acquistare una nuova macchina.

Una volta identificato il sistema da utilizzare per la gestione delle operazioni di backup, è possibile orientarsi su una soluzione quale Restore. Opensource, Restore non richiede alcun esborso economico ed è compatibile con sistemi Windows, Unix/Linux e Mac OS X.

Il prodotto è scaricabile in tre differenti versioni: una serie di pacchetti per Debian-Ubuntu, una macchina virtuale che può essere impiegata con i prodotti VMware (compreso il gratuito VMware Player) e un "live CD" che pesa circa 450 MB.
Il "live CD", se lasciato inserito all'avvio del personal computer, si fa carico di avviare una versione derivata di Ubuntu, resa più leggera grazie all'utilizzo del compatto "desktop environment" Xfce. Da qui, una volta completata la fase di boot, viene eseguita l'utility Restore.
Il vantaggio derivante da questo tipo di soluzione consiste nel fatto che è possibile provare il programma senza modificare la configurazione corrente del sistema in uso.

La macchina virtuale VMware può essere aperta con qualsiasi soluzioni per la virtualizzazione compatibile, compreso VMware Player. Facendo riferimento a questi nostri articoli, potete trovare una disamina del software gratuito messo a disposizione da VMware e la guida all'uso di uno strumento (VMmanager) che consente di creare nuove macchine virtuali o modificare la configurazione di quelle esistenti.

La configurazione di Restore è interamente gestibile ricorrendo ad una comoda interfaccia web, accessibile servendosi del browser.

Nel corso dei nostri test, abbiamo utilizzato l'immagine ISO del "live CD" di Restore, prelevandola dal sito web del prodotto. Dopo aver scaricato il file .iso, è necessario masterizzarlo su supporto CD ricorrendo al programma preferito (ad esempio, CDBurnerXP).
Lasciando inserito nell'unità CD ROM il supporto appena masterizzato e riavviando il sistema, verrà automaticamente avviata Xubuntu - versione ridotta della famosa distribuzione Linux Ubuntu - e, successivamente, l'utility Restore vera e propria.

Get Directory Path of an executing Batch file

Most people probably know that can use the variable %0 in a batch file to get the name of the executing batch file. However if you use that in conjunction with some batch parameter modifiers you can easily split that into a drive, directory or filename.

Therefore to get the location of an executing batch file from within that batch file you can use the variable %~dp0. Where d is the drive, p is the path and 0 is of course the name of the executing batch file.

This comes in real handy for me because I have some batch files on network drives that do some simple installs. Since the install files are usually in the same directory as batch file I can use %~dp0 as their path. Now when I double click on a batch file in windows explorer whether the drive is mapped or a UNC path the batch file has the correct path to the files.

If the drive is mapped this is not really necessary because the working directory is set to the directory that the batch file is in. However if you access this directory via a UNC path this is not the case. So by using %~dp0 you can get the correct directory path, even for UNC paths. Before I took the time to figure this out I always had to map the network drive to run the batch file, but no longer.

This was inspired by comments on Raymond's Capturing the current directory from a batch file post. On commenter suggested changing to the directory by using "cd /d %0\.." this of course doesn't work for UNC paths, so I just used the path instead. On another note instead of using "cd /d %0\.." to change the directory you can use "cd /d %~dp0" instead.

Overview

The 2007 Microsoft Office suite Service Pack 1 delivers important customer-requested stability and performance improvements, while incorporating further enhancements to user security. This service pack also includes all of the updates released for the 2007 Office suite prior to December of 2007. You can get a more complete description of SP1, including a list of issues that were fixed, in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 936982: Description of the 2007 Microsoft Office suite Service Pack 1.

Service Pack 1 will install even if a publicly available update has already been installed on your computer.

Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—please install all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.

By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able to open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007. The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats. For more information about the Compatibility Pack, see Knowledge Base article 924074.

Instructions

To install this download:

1. Ensure your system is up to date by installing all High-Priority/Required updates on Microsoft Update (required for Microsoft Office XP and 2003 users).


2. After installing all High-Priority/Required updates with Microsoft Update, download the Compatibility Pack by clicking the Download button above and saving the file to your hard disk.


3. Double-click the FileFormatConverters.exe program file on your hard disk to start the setup program.


4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

To remove this download:

1. On the Windows Start menu, click Control Panel.


2. Select Add/Remove Programs.


3. In the list of currently installed programs, select Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system and then click Remove or Add/Remove. If a dialog box appears, follow the instructions to remove the program.


4. Click Yes or OK to confirm that you want to remove the program.
