Carte pagamento, verifica Antitrust su Mastercard e otto banche

ROMA - L'antitrust ha avviato un'istruttoria nei confronti di Mastercard, e di otto banche e società finanziarie, per possibili intese restrittive della concorrenza - si legge in una nota - nel settore delle carte di pagamento in Italia. Le società sono Mastercard, Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, Banca Sella Holding, Barclays Bank, Deutsche Bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, Icbpi, Unicredit.

In particolare l'istruttoria, il cui avvio è stato notificato oggi alle parti interessate nel corso di alcune ispezioni eseguite in collaborazione con le Unità speciali della Guardia di finanza, "dovrà stabilire se la fissazione delle commissioni interbancarie nazionali per le transazioni con carte di pagamento in Italia da parte di MasterCard e quindi la loro applicazione da parte delle banche licenziatarie del marchio, restringa il confronto competitivo in Italia, trasferendo costi elevati sugli esercenti e sui consumatori".

MasterCard, presente sul mercato italiano con una quota significativa stimata intorno al 35-45% ed in costante crescita, prevede per ogni transazione, ossia per ogni acquisto di un singolo consumatore presso un negoziante, il pagamento di una commissione interbancaria nazionale (interchange fee). Tale commissione viene percepita dalla banca che ha emesso la carta ed è corrisposta dalla banca che gestisce i rapporti con i singoli esercenti. Si tratta, spiega l'Antitrust, di una commissione uniforme che, rappresentando una quota considerevole della commissione finale (merchant fee) a carico degli esercenti, può limitare il gioco competitivo, innalzando i costi del sistema.

Secondo l'Antitrust, la fissazione di una interchange fee elevata favorisce sia il circuito MasterCard sia le banche che gestiscono i rapporti con i commercianti, nonchè quelle che emettono le carte ai clienti. MasterCard trae infatti beneficio da commissioni interbancarie elevate perchè queste ultime incentivano le banche, che ne incassano l'ammontare, ad emettere carte del proprio circuito, e ciò a sua volta, aumenta il numero di possibili transazioni sulle quali le banche che gestiscono i rapporti con i negozianti percepiscono le merchant fee.

L'istruttoria dovrà quindi verificare se la definizione della interchange fee da parte del circuito e l'applicazione della stessa da parte delle banche che gestiscono i rapporti con i commercianti configurino fattispecie restrittive della concorrenza, sotto i due seguenti profili: una intesa orizzontale relativa alla definizione della commissione italiana da parte del circuito Mastercard (in quanto esito di una decisione di una associazione di imprese); un insieme di intese verticali basate sui contratti di licenza tra Mastercard e le singole banche che comportano l'applicazione uniforme e coordinata di uguali voci di costo così limitando il confronto competitivo.

Users on other computers that you might share your PowerPoint files with will need an internet connection to view the embedded videos, but will NOT require AuthorStream Desktop installed on their computers in order to do so. Ever wanted to insert YouTube videos into your PowerPoint presentations? AuthorStream desktop makes it extremely easy to do so. Here are more notes on this program:

What it does: embeds a YouTube video or images from the web into a PowerPoint presentation, allowing you to place and resize your media on the page as you would any image object. Does NOT download videos, and does NOT save the actual video inside your PowerPoint files.
User interface: click on the authorStream ribbon (in PowerPoint 2007) to access its functionality. Very straightforward. Note that I did not test on PowerPoint 2003 and am not sure what the interface looks like there.
Two ways to embed: you can either provide the URL for the YouTube video or image you would like to embed, or otherwise use the built in search functionality (will display search results from Google or Bing image search).
Sharing your files: you can email or share your Presentations with other users and they will be able to view them without having to have AuthorStream Desktop installed (they will need an internet connection though).
Uploading: AuthorStream Desktop provides 1-click PowerPoint presentation uploads to the AuthorStream online presentation sharing service, which could come in very handy if you use that service to share your presentations.

Wish list: (or how this program can be even better)

The ability to embed private video uploaded to hosting services such as DivShare or even incorporating into Powerpoint any standard HTML code used for embedding video into sites/blogs .This would make this software EXTREMELY useful in some settings (conferences, business presentations) where the video content could not be uploaded publicly to YouTube for privacy concerns (note that private YouTube uploads are a headache that requires setting up YouTube contact lists, logging in with a YouTube user ID and other non-practical measures).

The verdict: a great idea that is implemented in a very simple, straightforward way. This software presents a very practical and easy way for many people to use video in PowerPoint presentations by their videos into YouTube and embedding them into their presentations (which has the added benefit of keeping the PowerPoint files small and compact for the purposes of email, etc.) Not to mention the useful opportunity it presents to PowerPoint spammers everywhere

On the other hand AuthorStream Desktop can be so much more useful if it supported embedding FLV videos that are uploaded privately to file hosting services where only the people you share the video link with have access to it (DivShare is the service I use). This would make it possible to use PowerPoint with private video content in professional and business settings where uploading this content publicly to YouTube is not an option.

Una falla di sicurezza mette a rischio gli utenti di IE ed Office

C'è una nuova pericolosa vulnerabilità negli ActiveX utilizzati da parte di Internet Explorer. Dopo la lacuna di sicurezza scoperta nei giorni scorsi nel "Microsoft Video ActiveX" (ved. questa notizia), e che con buona probabilità sarà sanata quest'oggi mediante il rilascio di una patch, il gigante di Redmond rende nota l'esistenza di una falla all'interno dell'ActiveX "Office Web Components ActiveX".

Visitando con Internet Explorer un sito web maligno, contenente il codice nocivo in grado di sfruttare la vulnerabilità, l'aggressore può riuscire ad
eseguire malware sul sistema dell'ignaro utente. Come conferma l'Internet Storm Center (SANS), sono già in corso numerosi attacchi: molte pagine dannose sono già state allestite. Il problema è considerato particolarmente grave perché al momento non esiste una vera e propria patch ma solamente
delle soluzioni temporanee, comunque efficaci. L'Internet Storm Center ha infatti portato a "giallo" il livello di allerta sottolineando così la necessità per gli utenti di adottare contromisure adeguate.

Microsoft ha messo a disposizione in questa pagina uno strumento che consente di mettersi al riparo da eventuali problemi in attesa che vanga rilasciato un aggiornamento di sicurezza. Il primo pulsante "Fix it" permette di attivare la misura di difesa temporanea mentre il secondo ("disattivare soluzione") annulla gli interventi eventualmente apportati sul sistema.

Gli utenti più esperti possono mettersi al riparo adottando un approccio più complesso ma egualmente efficace.
La procedura consiste nell'aprire l'Editor del registro di sistema (Start, Esegui, REGEDIT), portarsi in corrispondenza della chiave HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility ed individuare le chiavi corrispondenti ai seguenti due CLSID:

{0002E541-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
{0002E559-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

Per ciascun CLSID rilevato, si dovrà creare - nel pannello di destra - un nuovo valore DWORD Compatibility Flags (nel caso in cui non esista già) ed impostarlo a 400 (Dati valore) in esadecimale.
In questo modo si imposterà il cosiddetto "kill bit" che impedirà il caricamento e l'utilizzo dell'ActiveX vulnerabile da parte di Internet
Explorer.

Non è detto che i CLSID riportati da Microsoft siano presenti nella chiave HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility sul proprio sistema. E' questa la situazione migliore: in tal caso non si correrà alcun rischio.

Prima vulnerabilità di sicurezza per Firefox 3.5: come risolvere

Attraverso il blog dell'azienda, Mozilla conferma la scoperta di una vulnerabilità di sicurezza che affligge Firefox 3.5, la più recente versione del browser web opensource. La falla riguarda il compilatore JavaScript JIT ("Just-in-time") e potrebbe essere sfruttata, da parte di malintenzionati, per eseguire codice potenzialmente dannoso sul sistema dell'utente.

Come gran parte delle vulnerabilità che interessano i browser web, anche nel caso di Firefox 3.5 l'aggressore può far leva sulla lacuna di sicurezza inducendo l'utente a visitare un sito Internet contenente, nelle sue pagine, il codice exploit.
Sebbene ancora non esista una patch ufficiale che permetta di risolvere il problema, è possibile disattivare temporaneamente JIT. Applicando questa soluzione, come ricorda Mozilla, il codice JavaScript presente nelle pagine web sarà comunque processato sebbene ad una velocità nettamente inferiore. Per disabilitare JIT, è necessario digitare about:config nella barra degli indirizzi di Firefox 3.5 e premere Invio, cliccare sul pulsante Farò attenzione, prometto, scrivere jit nella casella Filtro, fare doppio clic sulla voce javascript.options.jit.content modificandone così il valore da true a false.

Non appena Mozilla avrà rilasciato un aggiornamento per Firefox 3.5, una volta applicatolo, si potrà annullare la modifica ponendo nuovamente a true il valore del parametro javascript.options.jit.content.
Le due operazioni possono essere effettuate anche avviando Firefox 3.5 in modalità provvisoria.

La Pec italiana non decolla. Colpa della burocrazia

Il proposito era nobile: abolire le raccomandate per aziende e PA, in modo da ridurre costi e tempi di spedizione.
Nei fatti l'obbligatorietà della Posta elettronica certificata (Pec) ha provocato qualche mugugno sia tra gli operatori che forniscono il servizio sia tra gli utenti costretti ad usarlo.
I vantaggi sono innumerevoli sia per i privati sia per la PA. La Pec può essere usata, ad esempio, per l'invio di fatture e circolari, per la convocazione di assemblee e gare d'appalto. Qualche banca l'ha adottata per risolvere il problema delle truffe (il cosiddetto phishing) dotando ogni correntista di una casella Pec (Iwbank e Poste Italiane sono anche nell'elenco dei gestori tenuto dal Cnipa).

In questo ambito è l'Italia a dettare legge in Europa poiché la tecnologia messa a punto per realizzare la Pec è italiana. Nel contempo però non si placano le polemiche tra gli addetti ai lavori. C'è chi contesta il procedimento che ha portato a trasferire il concetto burocratico di "raccomandata con ricevuta di ritorno" a livello tecnologico. "Il metodo di trasmissione conta più del fatto che ho trasmesso un documento - spiega Stefano Noferi dell'azienda pisana Noze -. Problemi all'estero non ne hanno perché conta l'e-mail spedita. Inoltre rischiavamo di subire una procedura di infrazione per la violazione della normativa comunitaria sulla neutralità tecnologica". La Pec è stata introdotta con il decreto anticrisi emanato a fine 2008 poi convertito in legge. Cosa prevede? Devono dotarsi di caselle di posta certificata, nel caso non lo avessero già fatto in base a norme precedenti, le PA. Le nuove società sono obbligate ad aprire la propria casella Pec all'iscrizione nel registro delle Camere di commercio, mentre quelle già iscritte dovranno farlo entro tre anni. Per i professionisti, l'obbligo scatterà invece tra un anno, nei confronti degli ordini e i collegi cui sono iscritti.

Uno dei primi operatori Pec è stato Infocert dove fanno notare un'incongruenza contenuta in una bozza del decreto che chiarisce le modalità d'uso della Pec. Per attivarla, si legge, "i cittadini possono recarsi presso gli uffici abilitati all'attivazione". In altre parole si parla tanto di e-gov e poi non si riesce ad evitare di andare personalmente in un ufficio? "In nessun caso dovrebbe esserci la necessità di spostarsi - spiega Luca Brusutti, product manager Legalmail di InfoCert - in quanto la casella è facilmente acquisibile on line". "Il Cad (Codice amministrazione digitale) prevede che i documenti possano essere trasmessi con qualsiasi mezzo telematico, compreso il fax, e la loro trasmissione non deve essere seguita da quella del documento originale".

Solo se tutto il processo avverrà integralmente online, sarà possibile dimezzare i costi ed evitare disagi.
Secondo NetConsulting, l'utilizzo della Pec permetterà risparmi per oltre 500 milioni di euro per le imprese e 387 milioni per la PA. Complessivamente il sistema Paese eviterà di spendere circa 908 milioni. Nonostante la Pec per gli utenti sia economicamente vantaggiosa e semplice da usare non mancano le critiche, soprattutto da parte delle Pmi di informatica.
Che non vedono inoltre di buon occhio uno dei requisiti previsti dalla normativa per essere operatori Pec: avere un capitale sociale di almeno un milione di euro. Cosa che spinge a diventare semplici rivenditori, acquistando le caselle dai maggiori operatori presenti sul mercato che adottano politiche di prezzo molto aggressive. Alle piccole imprese non va giù l'idea di offrire informazioni dettagliate sui propri clienti a società concorrenti che potranno contattarli.

Free PDF to Word Converter: desktop app offers excellent PDF to Word/Doc conversions

Smart Soft's Free PDF to Word Converter is a free program that offers one-click PDF to Word (DOC) conversions. It performs conversions locally on your desktop (i.e. it is not a web service) and offers excellent fidelity to the original document.

I've written about PDF to Word/Doc conversions before (see the previously published comparative test); and while there are a handful of excellent conversion options available for free, the best are usually web services where you upload or email your PDF and receive the converted file back via email. The handful of local, desktop PDF to DOC apps have typically been more "lightweight" contenders offering far less sophisticated conversions than their web-based counterparts. Which is why Smart Soft's Free PDF to Word Converter is a very welcome addition to the field; it is a very capable app that can hold it's own against some of the best PDF-to-Word web services (although still outclassed by PDF to Word Free web service, which is still my favorite).

To test this app I performed 4 conversions (1) the US Form W-4 Tax forms; (2) a typical "read-me" type PDF containing text, images, and links, (3) a table with embedded images and other formatting, and (4) a PDF that is entirely generated from an image source. Here is a summary of the results.

General layout: this just may be the best desktop PDF to Word conversion app in terms of faithfully recreating the "general layout" and "look and feel" of documents. The only desktop app to output a reasonable Word conversion of the (very complicated) W4 tax form.
Image handling: is very good in general. MOST of the images in my conversions were imported and placed correctly, with the exception of two images that were inside of tables, which came out blank (although a third such images was inexplicably imported correctly).
Handling of tables: recreates the "look and feel" of tables but does not create actual Word tables I will say that is more or less the standard treatments of tables in most PDF to Word converters. The only exceptions are web service PDF to Word Free which actually produces Word tables, and PDF to Excel Free (also a web service) which will convert tables to Excel sheets.
Handling of text boxes: no continuous text; each line of text will be rendered in its own text box, making editing a rather complicated and labor intensive process.
Handling of text formatting: very good in general; font style, shading, bulleted points, and numbered lists were well preserved.
Hyperlinks: no working hyperlinks were generated in the output DOC files; this is also standard for most such converters.
Handling of special characters: I frequently get asked about a PDF to DOC converter that can handle foreign characters (such as Russian) correctly. I did not test for this myself so please let me know how this service fares in this respect if you test it yourself.
Fast performance: each page within your document takes mere seconds to convert.

The verdict: this program's PROS include a sleek, well design user interface, and simple, fast, one-click conversions. It also is truly free and is devoid of nags and distractions. A few changes could have made this program much better, including the option to merge text boxes together to create large, editable blocks of text, and better treatment for images inside tables.

Nonetheless, for a desktop freeware PDF to DOC converter this one is probably the best out there. Although as mentioned above you could get better conversions using some of the free web services, there are times when you might prefer to use a desktop program instead (e.g. if you have too many files that may not be practical to upload to a web service en-mass, if the file(s) are too big to email or upload, or if you have privacy or security concerns about uploading or emailing your personal or business PDF documents, just to name a few examples). If you prefer to use a desktop based app rather than a web service Smart Soft's Free PDF to Word Converter is probably the best freeware option.

Version Tested: 4.2.3.183 (I think).

Secunia PSI: sotto controllo la sicurezza dei programmi e dei plug-in per il browser

Personal Software Inspector (PSI), il software sviluppato dalla società danese Secunia che consente di effettuare una scansione del sistema alla ricerca di eventuali patch ed aggiornamenti di sicurezza mancanti, è cresciuto ancora arricchendosi di ulteriori funzionalità.

Mantenere il sistema operativo e le applicazioni installate costantemente aggiornate è la chiave di volta per evitare la stragrande maggioranza degli attacchi informatici. Tra i software presenti sul personal computer, quelli che presentano maggiori rischi sono le applicazioni che vengono impiegate per scambiare dati in Rete (si pensi al browser Internet, al client di posta elettronica, al software per l'invio e la ricezione di messaggi istantanei e così via).
Uno degli scenari di attacco più comuni consiste nel visitare una pagina web che contiene del codice "maligno", opportunamente inserito dall'aggressore, per eseguire automaticamente – sul sistema dell'utente – delle operazioni dannose, capaci di minare alla sicurezza del sistema e di rappresentare una grave minaccia per l'integrità e la riservatezza dei dati conservati sul personal computer. Attacchi di questo genere sono solitamente conseguenza dell'utilizzo di browser web non aggiornati che presentano una o più vulnerabilità di sicurezza critiche, spesso già ampiamente note.

In altri casi, gli aggressori cercano di indurre l'utente – utilizzando svariati espedienti – a scaricare ed aprire uno specifico file sul personal computer. Aprendo file PDF, documenti Word, Excel o PowerPoint, file musicali o video impiegando versioni obsolete di un programma può esporre a gravi rischi: anche in questo caso, sfruttando le lacune insite in alcuni software, un aggressore può aver gioco facile e riuscire ad eseguire il suo codice dannoso.

Se la funzionalità "Aggiornamenti automatici" così come il servizio "Windows Update" si occupano di controllare la disponibilità degli aggiornamenti per il sistema operativo e le applicazioni sviluppate da Microsoft, l'utente non dispone oggi di uno strumento unico per la gestione delle patch relative a tutte le varie applicazioni installate. Secunia PSI si prefigge di colmare tale lacuna offrendo un'interfaccia centralizzata attraverso la quale sia possibile verificare lo stato di ciascun programma e determinare se siano o meno disponibili degli aggiornamenti di sicurezza.

PSI non solo mette in allerta l'utente circa il rilascio, da parte dei rispettivi produttori, di patch ed aggiornamenti per le varie applicazioni ma elenca anche tutti i programmi, rilevati sul personal computer, che non dovessero risultare più supportati. Tali software rappresentano un rischio ancora maggiore poiché il produttore non metterà più a disposizione degli aggiornamenti per sanare eventuali vulnerabilità.

L'utilità di Secunia dà il meglio di sé nella "modalità avanzata": qui vengono fornite informazioni e dettagli tecnici circa tutti i programmi che necessitano di aggiornamenti. Nella "modalità semplificata", invece, viene attivata la funzionalità "easy-to-patch": l'obiettivo è quello di ridurre la lista dei software da aggiornare proponendo solo quelli che, secondo Secunia, sono più semplici da aggiornare per un utente dotato di conoscenze informatiche ridotte.

Tra le principali novità di Secunia PSI 1.5.0.0 c'è l'"inedita" funzionalità "Navigazione sicura": se sino ad oggi il programma si faceva carico di controllare quali versioni dei vari software erano in uso sul personal computer segnalando l'impiego di release oramai superate, PSI diviene ora in grado adesso di informare l'utente circa la presenza di plug-in ed add-on per il browser potenzialmente pericolosi.
Se il browser web, sia esso Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera o Safari, è aggiornato all'ultima versione è comunque possibile che resti ancora qualche spina nel fianco. E' il caso, appunto, di estensioni, plug-in ed add-on installati nel browser che debbono essere anch'essi sempre mantenuti aggiornati per scongiurare problemi di sicurezza.
La versione 1.0.0.5 di PSI, nella sezione Navigazione sicura, mostra il riquadro "Non sicuro per la navigazione sul web" ogniqualvolta add-on e plug-in per il browser web dovessero contenere serie e conosciute vulnerabilità di sicurezza.

In figura, ad esempio, è possibile notare come sul personal computer sia installata una vecchia versione di Internet Explorer, non aggiornata con le patch di sicurezza e, come aggravante, non viene utilizzata l'ultima release del Flash Player di Adobe.
Sullo stesso sistema, invece, Mozilla Firefox risulta sicuro per la navigazione perché, in questo caso, aggiornato all'ultima versione disponibile e facente utilizzo delle release più recenti delle varie estensioni.

Per ciascuna applicazione considerata insicura (l'utente non ha provveduto all'installazione di tutte le necessarie patch), PSI fornisce tutte le informazioni per provvedere alla tempestiva risoluzione del problema. In molti casi vengono forniti i link per l'effettuazione del download diretto degli aggiornamenti di sicurezza.
Nel caso dei programmi discontinuati dai rispettivi produttori ("End-of-Life"), PSI solitamente suggerisce la disinstallazione oppure la migrazione verso una versione successiva.

Per impostazione predefinita, Secunia PSI si occupa di monitorare costantemente il sistema rilevando anche l'installazione di nuove applicazioni o la rimozione dei programmi già presenti. Sulla base degli interventi via a via condotti sul personal computer, PSI aggiorna le sue liste e, di conseguenza, i suggerimenti proposti. Facendo riferimento alla scheda Impostazioni del programma, si può decidere se lasciare che PSI si avvii automaticamente ad ogni ingresso in Windows (Avvia Secunia PSI al boot) e se debba restare sempre attivo il monitoraggio automatico (Attiva il monitoraggio dei programmi).

Infine, è bene spendere due parole sulle cosiddette "regole di esclusione". PSI, per impostazione predefinita, effettua una scansione dell'intero contenuto dei dischi fissi rilevando quindi anche la presenza di versioni obsolete di applicazioni che dovessero essere state memorizzate, ad esempio, all'interno di cartelle di backup. E' ovvio che la presenza di un programma non aggiornato entro una cartella di backup rappresenta una minaccia assai contenuta perché la stessa applicazione non è in genere direttamente utilizzata dal sistema operativo per trattare le varie tipologie di file e perché, per essere eseguita, essa dovrebbe essere appositamente ricercata nel disco da parte dell'utente. Se si desidera evitare che PSI mostri dei messaggi di allerta relativi ad applicazioni inserite, appunto, all'interno di directory di backup, è sufficiente servirsi delle "regole di esclusione". Esse vanno comunque eventualmente adoperate con la massima cautela: la stringa di caratteri specificata nella regola, infatti, verrà paragonata con tutti i percorsi delle cartelle presenti sul sistema utilizzando una ricerca testo-libero. Ciò significa che inserendo, per esempio, c:\backup, PSI ignorerà tutte le directory contenenti il percorso specificato.

L'ultima versione di Secunia PSI introduce anche un meccanismo di valutazione del livello di sicurezza garantito dal sistema in uso. Il punteggio 100% è il massimo ottenibile: esso viene poi paragonato a quello raggiunto dagli altri utenti di PSI: la finestra principale del programma propone dati statistici e grafici riassuntivi.

Intel's New Brand Structure Explained

Over the last year or so, Intel has been quietly working behind the scenes taking a hard look at our brand structure and exploring ways to make it more rational and easier to understand. The fact of the matter is, we have a complex structure with too many platform brands, product names, and product brands, and we've made things confusing for consumers and IT buyers in the process.

All that is about to change. Or at least, we begin a process of change that will evolve over time. Here's what to expect:

1) First and foremost we've created a structure that leads with Intel. It seems simple, but we've lost some of this connection and we need to remind people who we are and what we make possible. This is the backdrop for our latest ad campaign, Sponsors of Tommorrow. As Silicon Valley historian and author Michael Malone recently wrote, "...what happens upstream in the world of chips sets the pace for everything that happens downstream in computers, smart phones, videogames, servers and, ultimately, in social networks, Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc."

2) Secondly, we are focusing our strategy around a primary 'hero' client brand which is Intel® Core™. Today the Intel Core brand has a mind boggling array of derivatives (such as Core™2 Duo and Core 2 Quad, etc). Over time those will go away and in its place will be a simplified family of Core processors spanning multiple levels:

Intel® Core™ i3 processor,
Intel® Core™ i5 processor, and
Intel® Core™ i7 processors.

Core i3 and Core i5 are new modifiers and join the previously announced Intel Core i7 to round out the family structure. It is important to note that these are not brands but modifiers to the Intel Core brand that signal different features and benefits. For example, upcoming processors such as Lynnfield (desktop) will carry the Intel Core brand, but will be available as either Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 depending upon the feature set and capability. Clarksfield (mobile) will have the Intel Core i7 name.

So the key here is there will be a range of features and capabilities within the Intel Core family - our flagship brand representing the highest performance and the latest technology - but simplified into entry-level (Intel Core i3), mid-level (Intel Core i5), and high-level (Intel Core i7). We will still have Celeron for entry-level computing at affordable price points, Pentium for basic computing, and of course the Intel® Atom™ processor for all these new devices ranging from netbooks to smartphones. For PC purchasing, think in terms of good-better-best with Celeron being good, Pentium better, and the Intel Core family representing the best we have to offer.

3) Lastly, we are changing and transitioning some of the platform brands. Intel vPro technology continues to stand for best in class security and manageability and will henceforth be paired with Intel Core in either Core i5 or Core i7 iterations. Again this wont happen overnight, but beginning next year Intel business client systems will carry either the Intel Core i7 vPro processor or the Intel Core i5 vPro processor name. With this focus on Intel Core, the Centrino processor technology brand will be retired for PCs beginning next year. However, Centrino has tremendous equity as a wireless technology, so we will transition the name to our Wi-Fi and WiMAX products beginning in 2010.

This will be an evolutionary process taking place over time, and we acknowledge that multiple brands will be in the market next year inclduing older ones, as we make the transition. But overall this is a good thing, designed to make it easier and more rational over the long run. Interested in hearing any feedback or comments from readers here. Forty-Three of The Best Free Windows Enhancements That You Should Know About

There is an impressive range of excellent freeware Windows enhancements and tweaks. This posting will present forty three excellent additions to Windows that you will like.

When I first thought of this post, I more or less knew what programs I wanted to list here. The common theme that brought these together was that they were all really cool Windows "enhancements": i.e. apps that tweak or change the way we work with files, folders, applications, or the system environment itself (or, apps that brings functionality to the Windows environment that could or should have been a built-in option in Windows ).

Two more things to say before presenting the list itself; the first is that this list might not include some well known titles because in some cases I shied away from Windows enhancement apps that try to do many things at once in favor of simpler, more straightforward ones. The second is to be aware that many of these have overlapping functions and hotkeys that you wouldn't necessarily want installed on the same system at the same time (you also dont want to overburden your PC, so install selectively).

Note: this post took a long time to write, so please Stumble or Digg!

Here's the list:

1- Fences: do you ever wish that there was some way to organize your icons into general, clearly-labeled areas on your desktop that you could move or organize without needing to deal with each icon individually? If so, you're in luck, as this is exactly what Fences does. You can create floating areas on your desktop, label them, and ove icons of any type into them; you can then re-arrange these by moving entire units around, etc. Fences will do two more things for you (1) it will preserve/save icon locations on your screen, and (2) it will allow you to double click an empty area on the desktop to hide all icons.

Note that Fences is still in beta and seems to exhibit some bugs on some machines. It works fine on my XP (with XP's Dr. Watson debugger disabled).

2- QTTabbar: ever imagined using explorer windows in a Firefox style tabbed interface? This is essentially what this (terrific) freeware does, but it also manages to deliver a range of nice functions, including the ability to browse contents of folders without clicking into them (see screenshot), the option to bookmark groups of open tabs, a searchbox for filtering files, image previews on mouse-hover, as well as a slew of others.

QTTabbar is extendible through a handful of plugins that provide extra functionality, including a "folder memo" plugin to add notes to folders.

3- Filebox Extender: this one adds new buttons on the title bar next to the minimize, maximize, and close buttons that provide favorite folders and recent folders access anywhere (including file open/save dialogs). Other functions: a "stay on top" pushpin button, and a window roll-up button that hides all but the title bar of a window.

There are many apps that are designed to access favorite folders and files, but this one is one of the most original and innovative.

4- Desktop Media: this may be familiar to you if you've worked with Liunx. Desktop Media is a free program that creates automatic shortcuts on the desktop whenever you plug in a USB drive, CD, or other media. The shortcuts will automatically disappear when the media is ejected..

This program also provides an interesting option whereby hardlink rather than shortcuts can be (optionally) created on NTFS drives (see "Link Shell Extension" below for more on hardlinks).

5- Sizer: allows you to you right click on the "maximize"button on the title bar in order to quickly change the size and/or placement of the active Window using a selection of pre-set profiles. You can add your own user-defined sizes and placements.

While this function hardly sounds revolutionary, I will tell you that once you start using this one you will wonder how you managed without it. Sizer will prove to be very useful and is in fact one of my first installs on a new machine.

6- Folder Menu: this is a terrific little free app that displays favorite folders anywhere on Middle mouse click or using a hotkey. It can even invoke favorite folders in Windows and MS Office open/save dialogs.

This is a new Autohotkey-based program that deserves to be more well known; since installing it it's become one of my favorites, and I am betting that you will like it as well.

7- Folder Size: ever noticed that Windows' detail folder view does not display sizes for folders? Well guess what, this free Windows extension adds a column to Windows' "detailed" view that displays folder sizes. Check out my review for how to get this set up.

The latest information as I write this is that a new version 2.5 is about to be released, so watch out for that.

8- WinSplit Revolution: a freeware program that brings instant, versatile docking and resizing of windows to the sides of the and/or corners of the screen. But what is really nice is that the program allows you to control the placement of your windows by using hotkeys, by using a "virtual numpad" control that is prompted by clicking on the app's icon in the system tray, or by so-called "drag'n go", which involves moving your window around the screen while pressing Ctrl+Alt (whereupon it will display visual previews of the resize area as you move your window around - see screenshot).

For another interesting program that offers a similar function check out PowerResizer, which is also excellent.

9- Q-Dir: is a free dual-pane file manager that is simply terrific. It offers a slew of nice functions, including bookmarking favorite folders, a search box for filtering files and folders, the ability to save configurations of open panes and folders, and a whole host of other nifty options. What is quite innovative about Q-Dir are the nifty buttons on the toolbar that let the user access multiple configurations of file panes, quickly and easily.

I personally use Q-Dir as a replacement for Windows explorer, such that clicking on a folder in Windows will open it using Q-Dir; In that sense it is the ultimate Windows enhancement. (See my original review of the program for instructions on how to do this, find favorite feature #6).

10- Taskbar shuffle: this freeware Windows extension gives you the ability to reorder the tabs in your taskbar (on the bottom of your desktop) by dragging them at will. Very cool!

11- Standalone Stack: this freeware allows you to create folder shortcuts that, when clicked, open up as Mac-style hovering icon stacks. It supports two styles of icons "grid" and "fan". The screenshot here depicts a grid-style such shortcut that I strategically placed in the "Quick Launch" area.

12- TaskSwitchXP: this is a freeware Alt+Tab replacement. It's my favorite because it is straightforward and simply scrolls across the different open apps and windows while (reliably) displaying a screenshot of the selected app. It strength is function rather than form, and I like the fact that it bucks the 3D vista-style and the Mac Expose trends (but if you must have these, check out WinFlip, Shock Aero, and DExpose2).

13- Link Shell Extension: is a freeware app that allows you to right click on files and folders and create instant (and effortless) hardlinked clones, with the single stipulation that your hard drive should be NTFS formatted.

A clone is NOT a copy. A little known piece of information is that a file in Windows XP and Vista can be in two places at once (as long as the hard drive is NTFS formatted and not FAT). Suppose that you keep videos of "The Sopranos" in their "Sopranos" folder, but that you had set up a "Favorite TV shows" folder where you wanted to keep a list of some of the TV-show episodes you like the most. If your hard drive is NTFS formatted, you can keep a clone of that video in that folder that does not occupy extra space on your hard drive (rather than create a duplicate copy.

14- Launchy: this is a freeware launcher for apps and files where, instead of clicking on shortcuts or icons of the programs or files you want to open, you type in the name of the program you are seeking in a search box and select it from a list of results (the program will refine the list of selections as-you-type, which is a very nice effect).

By default this program will monitor (index) the execs and shortcuts in your start menu but can be configured to look anywhere for any file type you want. Lastly I will say that once you start using this I guarantee you will not want to use your computer without it. Some good Launchy alternatives (also free): Find and Run Robot, Key Launch and Keybreeze.

15- Freesnap: ever wanted to snap just one or two edges of your window that you're working with right to the side of the screen? Freesnap is a freeware that lets you do just that (see screenshot). It will also let you use hotkeys to quickly send your window to any of the 4 corners of the screen (or the center), and perform a number of window-resizing operations.

16- Everything: this one is a free desktop file search program that works ONLY on NTFS formatted drives. The reason: it relies on the Master File Table of the NTFS volume to build its index of files, rather than constantly scanning and scouring the hard drive. What this means is that Everything will always be up to date with all file changes that occur on your hard drive.

The reason this one is included in this post is that more than any other program it has changed the way I work with Windows (with the possible exception of Launchy, above). I now find myself constantly right-clicking "Search Everything" on folders in order to locate the files that I am working with. Being able to right click on my computer in order to find a file or files anywhere on my drives is an extremely powerful thing to be able to do.

17- 3RVX: this freeware allows you to control your system's volume (up/down/mute) through hotkeys. Its not the most feature-packed utility of its kind (Volumouse might have that distinction), but it just may be the most pleasant to use, looks really pretty (emulates the MacOSX volume bezel, but is skinnable and comes with many other cool skins).

This is another one of those apps I have to have installed on my machine.

18- OSD Mute: a very simple free app that does a very simple thing: displays a "Mute On" message on your desktop near the system tray when the system volume is muted. While this is not quite revolutionary, it is so useful that I install it on all my machine, and is really an option that should have come built into Windows.

19- Dexpot: this is without a doubt the best, most feature rich and advanced freeware virtual desktop program for Windows. It doesn't offer some of the eye candy that you might find in some others (animated 3D cube transitions between desktops, for example), but what it lacks in style in makes up for in substance (e.g. rules, hotkeys, icon placements on different desktops). If you are unfamiliar with virtual desktops imagine being able to work on, say, your Office applications in one desktop, then flipping to another that has your browser/webmail, and then flipping to a third that displays, say, your media player.

One thing you can do with Dexpot that I have not found anywhere else is to actually designate different icons to different desktops. This alone makes it the undisputed number one virtual desktop app as far as I am concerned..

20- Infotag Magic: a freeware shell extension that tweaks Windows to display informational tooltips when hovering over a range of filetypes, including audio files, text files, shortcuts, and executables (see screenshot).

File extension types supported: wp3, wma, ape, and Ogg Vorbis (for audio), txt, ini, log, bat, diz, bak, and que files (for text files), exe, dll, ocx and lnk (for executables/shortcuts). I would have liked to have tooltips support for video files; if that's something you want it is provided in the latest beta of MediaInfo.

21- AudioShell: a freeware shell extension that allows you to view and edit audio files tags directly in Windows Explorer (for individual files or groups of files). It adds tabs in the audio file's right-click "properties" dialog that enable you to edit tag information on the fly. (Including album art, which you can easily import into the Audioshell tab and save it into the audio file itself.)

Audioshell will also display your audio file tag information inside tooltips when you mouse-over your audio files, and will add additional audio related columns that can be displayed in Windows explorer's folder "detail" view (e.g. Title, Album, Artist, etc.)

22- Stick: is an interesting freeware app that places dockable tabs on the sides of your screen that can contain a variety of functions, such as notes, RSS feeds, shortcuts for apps or favorite folders, etc.

The nice thing about this one is that the "dockable tab" effect works really well, and its a very interesting innovation on the typical Windows user interface.

23- Xentient Thumbnails: a freeware that automatically changes the icons for image files to appear as little thumbnail previews of the images themselves.

This means that the even in icon or tile view each individual image will display a thumbnail for its icon that reflects a preview of the image itself. It also means that your image files will display little thumbnails for their icons even when placed on the desktop (a nifty and rather unusual effect).

24- Thumbview: you might have noticed that some image file types (e.g. JPG, GIF, BMP and a few others). display preview thumbnails in Windows Explorer while others do not . What Thumbview does is provide support for 19 additional image file types such that Explorer is able to provide thumbnail previews for those as well. It also adds tooltips for image files in Explorer such that hovering over an image file displays its type, dimension, bitdepth, and filesize.

25- WinCDemu: a small, free, extension that adds to Windows the ability to mount disk images as virtual drives simply by double clicking on the image files. Supports .ISO, .IMG, .CUE, .BIN and .RAW disk images and an unlimited number of virtual drives.

Runs in the background with no user interface, and seamlessly integrates disk image files into Windows.

26- Allsnap: imagine that your windows had a little "magnetic field" around them such that if they came sufficiently close to each other they would simply snap together. This effect, which we have all seen employed by various apps (such as Winamp for example) is exactly what this freeware does. Very cool, and also configurable so that you could set exactly how many pixels around each window this "magnetic field " should be in effect.

There is also, interestingly, a portable version of this app which I just discovered.

27- TeraCopy: this free program integrates itself with Windows to deliver accelerated file copying in many instances as well as the ability to pause and resume copy operations. It comes especially handy when copying or moving a large number of files such that the entire process will not break down if it encounters, say, a file error.

You have the option to set whether to have TeraCopy perform all file copy operations by default (which is what I do), just when invoked by the user, or only when the "Caps Lock" key is on.

28- HOBComment: this free Windows extension adds a context menu entry that allows users to instantly add a comment to files and folders (yes, folders, which normally you wouldn't be able to add comments to in Windows). I've been looking for a long time and this remains my favorite way to add comments to files and folders (despite relatively sophisticated freeware general file tagging apps such as Tag2Find and Taggedfrog.

The one conspicuous drawback that afflicts HOBComment though is that it is sometimes unable to add comments to some file types, such as .MSI and MS Office files (forcing me to resort to right clicking properties/summary/comment in Windows to do so).

29- StyleFolder: this freeware adds a simple entry to the Windows context menu that makes it possible to change folder icons. And while there are a handful such apps, I like StyleFolder because it is simple and unassuming; but, more importantly, it saves the icon info within the folder rather than simply pointing to it, which means that folders retain their new, customized icons when they are moved to portable media or across the network, etc.

30- Unlocker: have you ever tried to move, delete, or perform other operations on a file or folder only to be notified that it is locked because it is being used by another process? Enter freeware Unlocker to the rescue. This software can (a) identify the process(es) that are using your files/folders and holding them hostage, and (b) will let you "unlock" these or optionally to kill the offending process so its no longer running.

Unlocker installs a convenient entry in the Windows context menu that can be used to right click any file or folder and investigate the processes that might be working with it, if any.

31- Send To Toys: this app will breathe new life into the "send to" entry in Windows' context menu by making it extremely useful and customizable. There are a number of commands that "Send To Toys" can introduce into the send to menu, including send to clipboard, send to command prompt, send to run, send to trash, and send to quicklaunch. But what makes this program really useful is the ability to add your favorite folders to the send to menu, whereby you can quickly copy or move any item to them (pressing Shift as you use the send to folder command will move your files/items rather than copy them, while pressing ctrl+shift will copy a shortcut).

32- RBTray: minimize any window to the system tray by right-clicking on the "minimize" button. Simple with fairly low resource consumption.

What I like about this one is that is coexists very well with other Windows enhancements (aforementioned Sizer, for example), when some other apps like it do not.

33- Trayconizer: this interesting free app is for those programs that you use that you wished would simply minimize to the system tray every time by default. Trayconizer can create special, modified shortcuts to these apps that, when run, will make these always minimize to the system tray without any further intervention by the user.

34- Flashfolder: this freeware apps makes it easy to access your favorite folders in Windows' open/save dialog (as well as that of MS Office). What is notable about FlashFolder, aside from it being extremely useful, is that in terms of coolness/form factor alone it scores extremely high points with me (check out the toolbar that add overlays on top of the open/save dialog in the screenshot to the right).

Aside from favorite folders, Flashfolder can also quickly access recently used folders and a number of other functions.

35- Folder Guide: this freeware lets you right click to access your favorite folders. Works on the desktop, in Windows' open/save dialog, as well as the MS Office open/save dialog.

There are two ways to add your favorite folders to "Folder Guide"; from the settings, you could browse to the folder of your choice, or simply right click on the folder you want to add and use the "Folder Guide" context menu entry.

36- Shock Bookmark: another freeware app that, similar to Folder Guide above installs your favorite folders in your right click context menu and enables quick access to these on your desktop and in the Windows open/save dialog (but, interestingly, not in the MS Office open/save dialog for this one). Shock Bookmark goes one further in that it lets you access favorite apps as well as favorite files in the context menu in addition to folders.

Like Folder Guide, Shock Bookmark allows you to right click on a folder in order to add it to the app's context menu. However, it also features "copy to" and "move to" functions on right click for quickly moving or copying your files to your bookmarked folders (similar to "Send to Toys" above)..

37-Open Target Shell Extension: [XP only]. This extension adds a right click context menu entry to Windows that shows up when you right-click on shortcut files, giving the option to instantly open the target folder where the item actually resides. This saves the user a few steps that would otherwise be required right-clicking properties then "find target" on XP.

Vista users do not need this as this functionality is already built into that OS.

38- MenuApp: this tiny free app lets you create shortcuts to folders that, when clicked on, display a browsable, cascading-style menu similar to the Windows Start menu. You can create a shortcut folder any folder(s) you like and place them in all sorts of convenient places, such as the quick launch menu area, on your desktop, or within your favorite launcher app, etc.

39- Visual Subst: this freeware presents an interesting way to access favorite folders by mapping them as virtual drives that you could access from "My Computer".

The idea is that this makes it easier to access these using on or two clicks from open/save dialogs or by navigating from anywhere all the way back to the root drive.

40- Visual Task Tips: [XP only] a lightweight freeware utility that brings thumbnail previews to minimized task bar items in Windows XP. Simply hover over a minimized taskbar button to display a preview pop-up (Windows Vista already has this functionality built in).

41- Explorer BreadCrumbs: [XP only] a free Windows explorer extension that add a "breadcrumbs navigation" toolbar for folders in XP. The breadcrumb navigation method is already built into Windows Vista; it comprises a flat path structure whereby each "node" in the path is interactive and can be navigated at will in order to quickly move back and forth across the folder structure.

Note: QT Address Bar is another freeware that delivers the same functionality.

42- VSO Image Resizer: delivers image conversion and resizing as a function within the Windows explorer context menu. What is interesting about VSO Image resizer, aside from the fact that it does a great job, is that it allows for the creation of different size/format/quality profiles that make it easy for the user to right click and quickly perform multiple, different resizing operation while accessing their commonly used settings. Also allows for image processing in batch.

43- XnView Shell Extension: freeware that embeds a number of image-related operations into the Windows context menu, including an interesting image preview inside the right click menu. Rivoluzione NIC.it: nuove procedure per registrare i domini

Il Registro del ccTLD "it", conosciuto anche con il nome di NIC.it e gestito dall'Istituto di Informatica e Telematica del CNR, si appresta a varare un cambiamento epocale delle norme che sino ad oggi dovevano essere seguite per giungere alla registrazione di un dominio ".it".
Dal prossimo 28 Settembre, infatti, sarà possibile registare un nome a dominio praticamente in tempo reale. Secondo quanto stabilito nei giorni scorsi, la nuova modalità di registrazione dei domini Internet ".it" (detta "sincrona") sostituirà via a via quella attuale ("asincrona") che prevede l'invio - da parte della persona fisica, del professionista o della società richiedente ("Registrant") - di una lettera di assunzione di responsabilità (LAR) al numero di fax gestito dal NIC.it.

Per un periodo di due anni, il sistema "sincrono" si affiancherà all'attuale meccanismo di registrazione "asincrono". Con le nuove regole recentemente approvate, gli interessati a "far proprio" un nome a dominio non ancora assegnato, potranno rivolgersi ad un "Registrar" che avrà titolo per operare direttamente sul database dei domini, senza la necessità di trasmettere alcun tipo di documentazione al NIC.it.

Il servizio "sincrono" di registrazione e mantenimento di un nome a dominio verrà erogato da parte di organizzazioni che hanno in essere un contratto con il Registro e che richiederanno un accredito. Il "Registrar" (ad esempio un provider Internet) farà da intermediario tra il cliente ed il Registro stesso.. I provider Internet che vorranno fornire il servizio di registrazione in tempo reale (si potrebbe arrivare a registrare un dominio .it in meno di un'ora...) dovranno superare una verifica tecnica al termine della quale sarà fornito loro lo speciale accredito per l'utilizzo del servizio. Il test ha come obiettivo quello di accertare la competenza tecnica del provider ad operare con il sistema di registrazione sincrono.
Una volta ottenuto l'accredito - ogniqualvolta venga impiegata la nuova modalità sincrona per la registrazione di un dominio o per l'effettuazione di interventi di modifica -, sarà compito del "Registar" mantenere tutti i dati comunicati dal cliente, comprese le sue generalità.

Dal punto di vista dell'utente finale, la nuova procedura dovrebbe senza dubbio snellire enormemente gli adempimenti necessari per registare un nome a dominio riducendo contemporaneamente le tempistiche. Per quanto riguarda i provider Internet, ciascuno di essi dovrà sviluppare un'interfaccia per la gestione dei meccanismi di registrazione, modifica e cancellazione dei domini .it in tempo reale.

A partire dal 20 Luglio prossimo entreranno ufficialmente in vigore i nuovi regolamenti e le linee guida: i provider interessati ("Registar") potranno sottoscrivere il contratto con il Registro ed avviare le procedure di accreditamento.

Un "biglietto di ritorno" da Windows Seven a Windows XP valido 18 mesi

Sino a qualche giorno fa circolavano delle notizie che segnalavano la concessione, da parte di Microsoft, del diritto di "downgrade" da Windows 7 a Windows XP solamente a coloro che avessero richiesto di accedere a tale opportunità entro sei mesi dalla data di lancio della versione definitiva di "Seven".

Microsoft ha preso posizione correggendo il tiro. Gli utenti che avranno titolo per accedere al "downgrade" (i possessori di licenze di Windows 7 Professional ed Ultimate) potranno decidere se tornare a Windows XP entro 18 mesi dal rilascio della versione finale di Windows 7, prevista per il prossimo 22 Ottobre. Ciò significa che la richiesta di "downgrade" potrà essere inoltrata entro il mese di Aprile 2011.

La possibilità di usufruire del "downgrade" si rivolge in particolare alle realtà aziendali che ancora oggi basano le proprie attività su Windows XP e che quindi hanno bisogno di maggiore tempo per dotarsi di applicazioni pienamente compatibili con Windows 7.

Batterie infiammabili, HP avvia il ritiro

Roma - Quella che potrebbe essere definita come la "maledizione delle batterie infiammabili" torna a colpire i grandi produttori di PC portatili e relative unità energetiche, e dopo il nuovo "focolaio" delle 100mila batterie li-ion di Sony tocca ora ad HP imbastire un piano di richiamo riguardante 70mila delle unità installate su svariati modelli di laptop commercializzati dall'azienda.

La notizia è emersa attraverso l'annuncio della Consumer Product Safety Commission statunitense su due incidenti riportati di batterie andate a fuoco, che hanno provocato danneggiamenti alle proprietà degli interessati ma non hanno fortunatamente avuto alcuna conseguenza sulla loro incolumità fisica.

In conseguenza dei due incidenti HP ha predisposto il richiamo di batterie installate su nove modelli della famiglia Pavilion, nove Compaq Presario e altri venduti tra agosto 2007 e marzo 2008. Il produttore statunitense ha invitato gli utenti a controllare le batterie dei propri sistemi, predisponendo tutte le informazioni necessarie sul sito del suo Battery Pack Replacement Program.

Il costo della sostituzione dei modelli difettati è ovviamente a carico di HP, e dovrebbe interessare sia le batterie integrate in sistemi completi (venduti a un prezzo variabile tra i 500 e i 3000 dollari) che le unità commercializzate separatamente al prezzo di 100-160 dollari.
L'assistenza del produttore è raggiungibile dai consumatori anche via telefono, quantomeno per quel che concerne i consumatori statunitensi..

Microsoft ha reso disponibile per il download il Service Pack 2 della versione 2007 di Office, pacchetto che include gli aggiornamenti più recenti per i software Microsoft appartenenti alla famiglia Office 2007. Microsoft segnala la presenza di alcune innovazioni specifiche implementate nel Service Pack 2, che non sono state integrate in precedenti aggiornamenti dei software Office 2007.

In particolare sono stati implementati miglioramenti relativi a stabilità, prestazioni velocistiche e protezione. Gli aggiornamenti già rilasciati inseriti nel Service Pack 2 sono aggiornati al mese di Febbraio 2009: è pertanto possibile che siano presenti altri aggiornamenti più recenti che devono venir applicati sopo l'installazione del Service Pack 2.

Identificare le periferiche sconosciute e scaricare i driver corretti

Quando si reinstalla di sana pianta il sistema operativo non è sempre facile individuare i driver corretti per le periferiche hardware che Windows non sa riconoscere e configurare in modo automatico. Il problema è particolarmente sentito da parte di quegli utenti che abbiano deciso di effettuare un "downgrade" da Windows Vista, ad esempio, a Windows XP o di installare i due sistemi operativi in configurazione "dual-boot".
Alcuni sistemi, sia desktop che portatili, che vengono commercializzati con Vista preinstallato, poi, spesso non offrono sul sito web del produttore i driver per XP. In queste circostanze, quindi, quando si provvede all'installazione di Windows XP, l'individuazione dei driver di periferica corretti, per i vari dispositivi indicati nella finestra "Gestione periferiche" come "sconosciuti", diviene opera ancora più problematica.

Come già ricordato, le informazioni che aiutano molto allorquando sia necessario stabilire "l'identità", sono accessibili dal Pannello di controllo, cliccando sull'icona Sistema, sulla scheda Hardware quindi sul pulsante Gestione periferiche. A questo punto, con un doppio clic sul dispositivo hardware indicato come sconosciuto (visualizzazione del punto interrogativo di colore giallo), si troveranno i seguenti dati: VEN, DEV e SUBSYS. Inserendo queste informazioni (o parte di esse) nella casella di ricerca di Google, si riesce molto spesso a stabilire con quale periferica si ha a che fare. Gli stessi codici (ved., in proposito, anche questo articolo), sono utilizzati da programmi freeware e commerciali per identificare ciascun hardware presente nella finestra Gestione periferiche di Windows. In particolare, VEN e DEV sono codici che identificano univocamente il produttore ed il dispositivo hardware.

Quando le ricerche in Rete non danno esito positivo, è possibile ricorrere ad apposite utilità che agevolano il riconoscimento delle periferiche hardware. Effettuando un "downgrade" da Vista a Windows XP può capitare molto frequentemente che diversi dispositivi hardware non vengano riconosciuti. Tra questi possono esservi schede video, audio, schede di rete, modem, sezione wireless, unità di memorizzazione e così via.

Durante i nostri test, sebbene nessuna delle utilità provate sia stata in grado di "dare un nome" a tutte le periferiche indicate come sconosciute, due prodotti hanno spiccato per quanto concerne le abilità di riconoscimento: DriverMax e Driver Detective.

Il primo è un software completamente gratuito che però, per poter essere impiegato senza limitazioni, necessita di una registrazione sul sito web del produttore (anche la registrazione è a titolo non oneroso).

Driver Detective, invece, è un programma shareware (la licenza costa poco meno di 30 dollari) che può essere scaricato e provato.

Ovviamente, se la scheda di rete od il modem non dovessero funzionare, DriverMax e Driver Detective dovranno essere copiati ed installati sulla macchina d'interesse utilizzando un'unità di memorizzazione esterna (ad esempio una comune chiavetta USB). Ad ogni modo, dal momento che entrambi i programmi necessitano di una connessione Internet attiva e funzionante (debbono consultare le informazioni conservate nei loro archivi remoti), sarà comunque indispensabile individuare una modalità che permetta di collegarsi alla Rete.

In questo articolo abbiamo illustrato come utilizzato DriverMax per il backup dei driver in uso sul sistema. Si tratta, questa, di una possibilità utilissima nel caso in cui si debba provvedere alla reinstallazione completa della medesima versione di Windows.
Dopo aver installato il programma, è necessario cliccare sul pulsante Claim your free registration code, premere Next, I would like to create a new account, impostare un nome utente ed una password (costituita da almeno 5 caratteri alfanumerici). Qualora il nome utente specificato dovesse risultare già in uso, il programma restituirà il messaggio d'errore "your username is already taken". In questo caso si dovrà optare per un nome utente diverso ripetendo la procedura di registrazione. Al termine dell'operazione, si riceverà una e-mail all'indirizzo di posta elettronica specificato (nel giro di 10-15 minuti). Per confermare la registrazione ed attivare il proprio account, si dovrà copiare il codice riportato nell'e-mail (CTRL+C), cliccare sul pulsante Enter registration code e fare clic sul pulsante Paste. Premendo il pulsante OK, DriverMax visualizzerà il messaggio Thank you for registering the program. A questo punto, DriverMax sarà utilizzabile senza alcun tipo di limitazione.

Per identificare i dispositivi sconosciuti, dalla finestra principale del programma, è sufficiente cliccare su Check for drivers updates. In questo modo DriverMax segnalerà dapprima la disponibilità di eventuali driver aggiornati quindi, cliccando su Identify unknown hardware si potrà avviare il riconoscimento degli elementi che mancano all'appello. Per ciascuno di essi DriverMax fornisce il link diretto per il download del driver corretto.

Driver Detective richiede, come requisito essenziale, la presenza del .Net Framework 2.0. Nel caso in cui ne dovesse essere rilevata la mancanza, il programma ne propone il download dalla rete Internet e la successiva installazione.
Al primo avvio dell'applicazione, viene richiesto di specificare quale computer è in proprio possesso. Driver Detective effettua una prima analisi indicando subito il produttore. Nei riquadri Selezionare la vostra marca, Selezionare la tua linea e Selezionare il vostro modello si dovranno ovviamente comunicare produttore, serie e modello del personal computer. Nel caso in cui il sistema sia assemblato e quindi sprovvisto di marca e modello, si dovrà selezionare l'opzione Utilizza intelligence di rilevamento universale di Driver Detective.

Dopo aver cliccato sul pulsante Analizza ora, Driver Detective controllerà i driver già presenti sul sistema segnalando la disponibilità di versioni più aggiornate ma, soprattutto, fornendo l'identità delle varie periferiche. Nella versione non registrata, Driver Detective non permette di accedere al download dei pacchetti d'installazione dei vari driver ma fornisce comunque preziose informazioni sui dispositivi riportati come "sconosciuti" nella finestra "Gestione periferiche" di Windows.

Nel caso in cui l'aggiornamento di una o più periferiche hardware non dovesse andare a buon fine, suggeriamo comunque di tentare un aggiornamento collegandosi al servizio Windows Update di Microsoft.

Ridurre il "peso" delle immagini e delle foto digitali con RIOT

Quando si pubblicano immagini sul web è sempre bene ottimizzarle al massimo per evitare di rendere le pagine troppo "pesanti" e quindi più difficoltose a prelevarsi utilizzando connessioni lente. Il salvataggio delle immagini per la pubblicazione su pagine web, l'invio tramite e-mail o la memorizzazione su altri supporti impiegando impostazioni che consentano di ottenere il giusto equilibrio tra rapporto di compressione e qualità è certamente un'operazione non semplice da eseguire se non si ricorre agli strumenti software più adatti.

RIOT, acronimo di Radical Image Optimization Tool, offre un valido aiuto assistendo l'utente nella scelta del rapporto di compressione migliore e di tutti quei parametri chiave che contribuiscono a rendere un'immagine più leggera in termini di spazio occupato senza evidenti perdite a livello qualitativo.

Tra le principali caratteristiche di RIOT vi è la possibilità di aprire contemporaneamente più immagini e salvarne delle copie ottimizzate nei formati JPEG, GIF e PNG.

L'interfaccia di RIOT è semplice e chiara: una finestra suddivisa in due mostra l'immagine originale e quella che si otterrà dopo l'attività di ottimizzazione. Tutto il processo di generazione della nuova immagine viene gestito in memoria così da poter visionare il risultato finale in tempo reale.

RIOT consente di scegliere se si desideri o meno conservare i metadati eventualmente presenti nel file d'immagine di partenza (commenti, IPTC, Adobe XMP, profili EXIF ed ICC) e mette a disposizione una serie di strumenti per l'effettuazione di modifiche di base (ridimensionamento, rotazione, riflessione, ingrandimento e così via).

L'utilizzo di RIOT è completamente gratuito per scopi personali. Il software viene distribuito anche sotto forma di plug-in per il famoso software IrfanView (programma che permette di effettuare una serie di elaborazioni di base su immagini e foto digitali): in tal caso, la funzionalità è fruibile selezionando il comando Save for web dal menù File.

Al momento RIOT non integra una caratteristica per l'applicazione contemporanea, delle stesse opzioni di ottimizzazione, ad interi gruppi di immagini ("batch processing"). L'autore ne assicura comunque l'inserimento in una prossima release del programma insieme con il supporto TWAIN, la possibilità di aggiungere "timbri" sulle immagini e di definire aree da rendere trasparenti.

Dopo aver avviato RIOT, il programma mostrerà la finestra principale suddivisa in due grandi aree: Initial image e Optimized image. Nella prima verrà caricata l'immagine originale (File, Open), nella seconda si potrà contemporaneamente visionare il risultato dell'ottimizzazione. In calce alla schermata sono indicate le regolazioni effettuabili.

A seconda che si voglia ottimizzare le dimensioni in termini di "peso" di un'immagine JPEG, GIF o PNG, RIOT visualizza un insieme di differenti opzioni (schede Options, Metadata e Mask) nella parte bassa della finestra. Le opzioni permettono di regolare la qualità dell'immagine ed agire sulla profondità del colore.

Aprendo immagini ad alta risoluzione, RIOT ne proporrà il ridimensionamento in modo tale da ridurre i tempi di elaborazione (This file contains a high resolution image. RIOT can handle such images, but processings can be quite slow in this situation). E' possibile acconsentire oppure negare il ridimensionamento.
Immediatamente, RIOT visualizzerà le dimensioni dell'immagine iniziale e, a destra, quelle delle versione ottimizzata.

Il comando Compress to size del menù Tools permette di specificare la dimensione in chilobyte che si vuole ottenere a partire dall'immagine originale: penserà RIOT ad applicare le modifiche necessarie per raggiungere la dimensione in "peso" indicata.

Interessante anche l'opzione Auto-rotate images according to camera info from Exif profile raggiungibile attraverso il menù Tools, Options. Spuntando l'apposita casella, RIOT provvederà a ruotare automaticamente le immagini provenienti dalle macchine fotografiche digitali, attingendo alle informazioni Exif.

Tutte le fotocamere più recenti salvano, insieme ai dati che riguardano la foto vera e propria anche delle informazioni aggiuntive ("metadati") sulle impostazioni della fotocamera al momento dello scatto (modello e produttore della fotocamera, orientazione, apertura, velocità dello scatto, lunghezza focale, modalità meteorologica, velocità ISO,...) e sulla data ed ora, appunto. Tali indicazioni sono conservate nel file dell'immagine, nel formato Exif (Exchangeable file format).

Per procedere con la memorizzazione della versione "ottimizzata" dell'immagine o della foto digitale, è sufficiente cliccare sul pulsante Save della barra degli strumenti.

L'ultima versione di RIOT è prelevabile gratuitamente facendo riferimento a questa scheda.

Gli utenti del software IrfanView possono utilizzare RIOT anche sotto forma di plug-in. E' sufficiente scaricare questo file dal sito di RIOT, aprire il file Zip, accedere alla cartella Riot_dll quindi estrarre il file Riot.dll nella cartella \plugins di IrfanView (assicurarsi che il programma sia chiuso) ed il file FreeImage.dll nella directory principale di IrfanView (ossia nella cartella ove risiede il file eseguibile i_view32.exe).

A questo punto, riavviando IrfanView si troverà, all'interno del menù File, il nuovo comando Save for web... (Plugin). Dopo aver aperto l'immagine che si intende ridurre in termini di "peso", sarà possibile ricorrere a Save for web... per aprire l'interfaccia di RIOT.

Ecco Wolfram Alpha, il motore di ricerca intelligente

Una nuova applicazione per Internet è stata appena lanciata e rischia di essere un'alternativa a giganti come Google. Si tratta di un motore di ricerca che riesce a capire le richieste fatte dagli utenti e a offrire risposte specifiche, su misura, come farebbe un essere umano.

Il nuovo sistema, battezzato Wolfram Alpha, presentato all'università di Harvard a fine aprile, rappresenta un primo passo verso quello che molti considerano come il Santo Graal di Internet. Per questo ha già sollevato un grande entusiasmo tra gli esperti di tecnologia, i quali credono che questo nuovo motore di ricerca sarà una pietra miliare nell'evoluzione di Internet. Nova Spivack, specialista del web, non lesina elogi. «E' qualcosa di impressionante per la rete. Quali saranno le sue conseguenze? Un nuovo modello per utilizzare il computer per la ricerca sulla Rete».

Non contento di rispondere direttamente a delle domande come: "Qual è l'altitudine del monte Everest?", Wolfram Alpha genererà una pagina molto chiara di informazioni con il soggetto richiesto che sarà accompagnato anche da grafici e da tabelle. Tuttavia, la vera innovazione che porterà questo nuovo motore di ricerca, sarà la capacità di trovare delle soluzioni a domande complesse in tempo reale, stando a quanto dice il suo inventore, il dottor Stephen Wolfram. Se voi domanderete al motore di ricerca di "comparare l'altitudine dell'Everest con la lunghezza del Golden Gate Bridge", ve lo dirà. Se voi volete sapere "che tempo faceva a Londra il giorno in cui il presidente Kennedy è stato assassinato", il motore recupererà le informazioni e vi fornirà la risposta. Digitate «Re diesis maggiore", e vi varà ascoltare la nota. Se voi volete conoscere "la data della prossima eclisse solare su Chicago" o "la posizione esatta della Stazione spaziale internazionale in questo momento", ve le indicherà.

Wolfram Alpha è stato sviluppato con Mathematica, un package scientifico di successo usato da scienziati, ingegneri e ricercatori universitari che permette di effettuare calcoli matematici complessi. «Io - spiega il suo inventore - volevo rendere calcolabili le conoscenze che abbiamo accumulato nella nostra cività. Non ero sicuro che ciò fosse possibile. E sono molto colpito dal risultato". Il dottor Wolfram, 49 anni, che ha fatto gli studi secondari a Eton e il dottorato in fisica delle particelle all'età di 20 anni, spiega che il lancio di Wolfram Alpha non sarà che l'inizio del progetto. Il motore, che sarà ad accesso libero, basa le sue ricerche su Internet e su delle banche dati inserite da privati. Il suo inventore stima che ci vorranno un migliaio di persone per tenerlo aggiornato con le ultime scoperte e informazioni.

Considerando che Google è ormai uno dei primi marchi del mondo con un valore di 75 miliardi di euro, Wolfram Alpha ha il potenziale per divenire uno marchio noto su scala planetaria. Il suo inventore intanto non esclude la possibilità di collaborare con Google o con Wikipedia. «Noi vorremmo lavorare con tutte le società legate alla nostra attività. Benubird PDF: free document management system lets you manage, organize, and tag your files

Description: Benubird PDF is a free document management system designed to manage all manner of documents and files in a single, centralized location. It allows you to organize your files and documents within virtual folders (irrespective of where they reside on your hard drive), and to and apply tags to them as well as other metadata. The interface provides for quick and easy filtering and search capabilities. Advanced features include the ability to monitor local folders for changes and to use a set of user-defined rules to update the library of documents/files accordingly.

One way to describe what a document management system is to consider the filtering functions available in, say, modern media players: you can filter songs by genre, artist, album, and even tags (for some), etc, in order to find a correct set of results. Benubird PDF allows you to do something similar for documents and files; you can create a "library" of documents/files, organize them in virtual folders, add tags and metadata, and filter the documents according to the criteria you need.

Note that the program title (Benubird PDF) elevates its presumed ability to convert any type of document to PDF (presumably because of PDF's status as a "standard" document format). The only problem with this is that it actually does NOT convert other documents to PDFs, at least not in the free version that I tested. It seems that for PDF conversions it is designed to use a shareware virtual PDF printer called NovoPDF, but it doesn't seem to install this properly. This really is no big deal though, since you can use the program to manage any document or file type. If you need PDF conversions, use the free PDFCreator, PrimoPDF, or doPDF (all very capable freeware virtual PDF printers).

Here are more notes on this program:

Creating a library: you can add documents and files to the library by specifying a file or folder (or zip archive) or by drag and drop; however you can use a set of rules to filter exactly the file types to add, whether to include subfolders, which virtual folders (called "collections") you might want them to be automatically added to, and even filter by metadata (e.g. all documents from author x to be added to collection y).
Virtual folders: you can create a set of hierarchical folders/subfolders (collections) and organize your files in them. This is virtual and completely independent of where they reside on the hard drive. One cool option is the ability to select a bunch of documents/files and right click to add them to a collection or create a collection out of them.
Documents: any filetype can be added. The program is designed to display previews of some filetypes including Office files, PDFs (if you use Adobe Reader), image files, and some media files.
Windows context menu: want to add file(s) or folder(s) to the library? You can do this quickly by right clicking on them in explorer and using Benubird PDF's context menu entry.
Metadata: there are 5 fields that can be used as metadata for any file type: Title, Author, Subject, Categories, and Comments. At times there will be overlap between these and any metadata that is already defined in your files (e.g. most Office documents will have a Title and author by default, but will not necessarily be correct).
Tags: in addition to the metadata fields discussed above, you can add tags to any file(s) at will, and filter by these in the right hand pane. To filter by tags, click (or ctrl+click) on the tags; to un-filter, click anywhere on the white space in the tag pane. To add tags, you will have to define them first in the "Library tags" section (they cannot be defined on the fly).
Folder monitoring: if using this option, the program will monitor folders you specify according to certain rules you set for file extension types, metadata, checking frequency, etc. (A process names "Benubird assistant will run in the background at all times, but it only consumes 6 megs or so, which is quite light).
User interface: is quite good (employs the ribbon-style interface popularized by Office 2007). The media-player like filters section on top is both powerful and will be familiar to most people. You can view your files as icons or list and sort by column names, etc.
The search function: a powerful, quick and easy way to hone in on what you want.
"Smart" playlists: actually smart "collections" (i.e. virtual folders). Three of these: last modified files, last added, and an "incomplete properties" collection that can

Mass metadata editing by user defined rules: for example, a way to populate"Title" metadata (or other fields) from the filename or some section(s) of the filename or path.

The verdict: Benubird PDF provides a very simple and easy way to categorize, and organize your documents and folders, and with its folder-monitoring option it may be one of the best solutions for general, system-wide file tagging.

this is a well thought out, powerful, and professional program that has a lot of potential. The program's web page states that Benubird PDF is "guaranteed to save you time and revolutionize the way you work with your documents", and at least for some I think this might turn out to be the case.

Nel mese di Novembre 2007 Intel ha presentato i primi processori della famiglia Nehalem, nome in codice che definisce una specifica architettura adottata per la costruzione dei propri processori che il produttore americano adotterà in tutte le proprie soluzioni per sistemi desktop, notebook e server. Le prime versoni di processore della famiglia Nehalem che Intel ha presentato in commercio sono quelle Core i7, destinate a sistemi desktop top di gamma. Nella giornata odierna Intel presenta ufficialmente le prime cpu Nehalem destinate a sistemi workstation e server sino a 2 Socket: la gamma di cpu Xeon 5500 comprende una lunga serie di nuovi modelli che vengono da Intel specificamente proposti per alcune tipologie di utilizzo.

I processori Xeon 5500 presentano, nelle differenti versioni disponibili in commercio, caratteristiche tecniche particolari che si adattano a specifici ambiti di impiego. Intel propone le versioni con TDP sino a 95 Watt per l'utilizzo in sistemi server, mentre le cpu con TDP massimo di 130 Watt sono indicate specificamente a sistemi workstation a motivo dei più elevati requisiti per la dissipazione termica. Sono disponibili anche versioni con valori di TDP più contenuti, sino a giungere ai 38 Watt del modello Xeon L5508 con frequenza di clock di 2 GHz, dotato tuttavia di architettura dual core. I processori della serie Xeon 3500 si affiancano a quelli Xeon 5500, proponendosi specificamente per architetture workstation a singolo Socket.

Ritroviamo per questi processori le stesse specifiche tecniche rese familiari dalle cpu Core i7: la cache di terzo livello o L3 è in quantitativo massimo di 8 Mbytes, con versioni di processore dotate di una quantità dimezzata così da proporre soluzioni per tutte le fasce di prezzo. Varia anche la frequenza di clock del bus Quick Path Interconnect, che può raggiungere quale massimo i 6,4 Gigatransfer al secondo nelle cpu con frequenza di clock più elevata. A seconda del processore sono disponibili le tecnologie HyperThreading e quella Turbo Mode, il cui funzionamento verrà illustrato nelle pagine seguenti.

A quali chipset vengono abbinati questi processori? Le soluzioni Xeon 5500 possono sfruttare i chipset della serie Intel 5520 e 5500, mentre per le soluzioni Xeon 3500 la compatibilità è estesa anche alle schede madri basate su chipset X58. Le soluzioni Xeon 5500 hanno quale limite massimo di memoria installabile 144 Gbytes; per i sistemi Xeon 3500 questo valore scende a 24 Gbytes, più che adeguato considerandone l'utilizzo in workstation a singolo socket.

Intel propone 4 versioni di processore Xeon 5500 specificamente indirizzate ai sistemi embedded e delle telecomunicazioni, caratterizzate per questo motivo da un valore di consumo particolarmente contenuto. Ci riferiamo ai modelli X5540, X5504, L5518 e L5508, con quest'ultima versione capace di contenere il TDP entro i 38 Watt. Per questi processori Intel ha già dichiarato un supporto esteso di ben 7 anni quale ciclo di vita del prodotto.

L'attenzione di Intel per i processori Xeon serie 5500 è notevole: il produttore americano definisce il lancio odierno come il più importante, nell'ambito delle proprie soluzioni server, che sia avvenuto nel corso degli ultimi 15 anni, cioè da quando è stato presentato il processore Pentium Pro.

Quella Nehalem è, come noto, un'architettura completamente nuova. Ogni anno Intel presenta una nuova generazione di processori, che possono implementare un'architettura completamente nuova oppure essere costruiti utilizzando una nuova tecnologia produttiva più sofisticata rispetto a quanto in precedenza disponibile. Prendendo come riferimento le cpu Nehalem, a queste corrisponde una fase Tock, cioè quella di una nuova generazione di microarchitettura completamente differente rispetto alla precedente. Lo stesso era accaduto nel 2006 con il debutto delle cpu della famiglia Merom, che hanno poi preso il nome commerciale di Core 2 Duo e Core 2 Quad a seconda delle versioni; in quel caso il cambio architetturale è avvenuto in sostituzione delle cpu Pentium D.

Le fasi Tick indicano l'utilizzo di un nuovo processo produttivo: le cpu Nehalem sono costruite con tecnologia a 45 nanometri, la stessa adottata dalle cpu della famiglia Penryn (Core 2 Duo e Core 2 Quad) disponibili in commercio. Alla fase Tick corrisponde tipicamente anche un refresh dell'architettura, con l'implementazione di alcune funzionalità complessivamente considerate minori; ad esempio, con le cpu Penryn ha debuttato la tecnologia produttiva a 45 nanometri e contestualmente sono state introdotte le istruzioni SSE4 non presenti nelle soluzioni della famiglia Merom. L'evoluzione a 32 nanometri di tecnologia produttiva delle cpu Nehalem è nota con il nome di Westmere; i processori di questa famiglia debutteranno non prima della fine del 2009, quantomeno nella loro declinazione per sistemi desktop.

Dop aver evidenziato quali modelli compongano la famiglia di processori Intel Xeon 5500 e mostrato come l'architettura Nehalem si posiziona a confronto con le altre soluzioni sviluppate da Intel, vediamo quali siano le principali caratteristiche architetturali delle nuove proposte Intel per sistemi server e workstation a due Socket.

fsck utility - check and repair LINUX file systems

Introduction

This page introduces the fsck utility, used to check and repair file systems.

File systems can become inconsistent. This can be caused by power failure, incomplete shut-down and hardware failure. This causes file system operations to be incomplete.

This is less of a problem with journalized file systems (such as Ext3) which write changes to a log journal before committing to the main file system. In the case of a failure, the journal is re-executed until the system is consistent.

If the system is interrupted and every thirty reboots, fsck is run.

The many faces of fsck

To the new user, there often seems to be a lot of applications with similar names to fsck, such as fsck, fsck.ext2 and e2fsck. This is because different applications have been written for each file system as it has been written. In order to consolidate this into one system, the file system name is appended to fsck to run that utility.

For example: fsck.ext2 runs fsck on an ext2 file system.

How does it know which file systems to check?

The /etc/fstab file is scanned. All non-zero pass numbered partitions are checked starting with one (which is normally the root partition).

Next all mounted file systems are scanned sequentially.

Running

Fsck should always be run in single user mode other wise data can be corrupted.

Fsck runs in two modes: interactive - where each error encountered requires the users input and non-interactive where fsck attempts repair.

The program is run using the command:

fsck -F file_system_type partition

Non-interactive:

fsck -F file_system_type -y partition

For example, to check an ntfs partition, /dev/sdb1 non-interactively:

Right-click Restore
If you only need to restore a couple of files, your best option is to use "right-click restore." It's the simplest, most efficient way for Windows users to get their files back.

Navigate to the location of the file(s) you want to restore.
Right-click in the the white space.
Select Restore Files in Folder.
Select the file version(s) you wish to restore.

MozyHome Virtual Drive
Mozy creates a virtual drive on your computer that you can use to view or restore your backed up files. To restore from your hard drive:

Open My Computer (either on your desktop of from the Start menu).
Click the drive labeled MozyHome Remote Backup.
When the MozyHome Remote Backup window appears, right-click on the drive that contains the data you wish to restore.
Select either Restore or Restore To.

DiskDigger - free data recovery made easy

What is DiskDigger?

DiskDigger can recover files from any type of media that your computer can read. This includes USB flash drives, memory cards (SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc), and of course your hard drive. The types of files that it recovers include photos, videos, music, documents, and many other formats.

DiskDigger can even scan reformatted or badly formatted disks (disks to which Windows can't assign a drive letter), and even disks with bad sectors. It bypasses the Windows file system drivers and scans your disk directly. It has its own built-in support for the following file systems: FAT12 (floppy disks), FAT16 (older memory cards), FAT32 (newer memory cards and hard disks), NTFS (newer hard disks), and exFAT (Microsoft's new successor to FAT32).

DiskDigger is also very compact and portable. The entire program is a single executable file that you can run from anywhere. There's nothing to "install," and the program doesn't leave any trace of having been run.

You may find DiskDigger useful if…

you deleted one or more photos from a memory card by accident, and want them restored.
you deleted one or more photos from a memory card on purpose, but now want them restored.
you deleted some documents from your USB flash drive, and want to recover them.
you came across an old hard drive of yours (or someone else's) that's been reformatted, and would like to see what its previous contents were.

How does it work?

DiskDigger has two modes of operation which you can select when scanning your media for deleted files:

Scan the file system for deleted files (dig deep). This scans the file system that is present on your media, searching for deleted file entries. Supported file systems are FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS. The advantages of this are:
    - Very fast
    - Recovers all file types
    - Recovers file names
And the disadvantages are:
    - Doesn't support all possible file systems (see above for supported file systems)
    - Doesn't scan entire disk (only scans what the file system is aware of)
Scan the disk surface for traces of lost files (dig deeper). This thoroughly scans every sector of your media, searching for traces of known file types. The advantages of this are:
    - Scans entire disk
    - Goes underneath the file system, therefore independent of file system
And the disadvantages are:
    - Slower (sometimes much slower) than the first method
    - Doesn't recover file names or fragmented files
    - Only supports certain file types

What isn't DiskDigger?

It's not magic. It can't recover any arbitrary file from any amount of time in the past. When trying to recover lost files, you should be realistic. In a real-world situation, you'll have a good chance of recovering your files only if they were deleted very recently. The more you keep using your disk to work with new files, the slimmer your chance of recovering deleted files. Of course it's always worth a try.

It is not a "repair" utility. It cannot repair a broken memory card or disk. DiskDigger is a strictly "read-only" tool, and never changes the contents of the media you scan. It will, of course, scan unformatted (or badly formatted) media, but it won't attempt to fix the formatting of the media.

Features:

DiskDigger scans for many different types of files, including photos, videos, music files, and documents, and displays what it finds as it scans in real time.
You can preview most of the files found by DiskDigger without having to save them to a different location first. More than that, you can preview files while DiskDigger continues scanning!
DiskDigger scans any type of media that is readable by your computer, including USB flash drives, memory cards (SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc), and your hard drive(s).
It can undelete files from all types of FAT partitions (including the new exFAT file system), as well as NTFS.
It can go underneath the file system to scan for traces and remnants of lost files.
DiskDigger does everything in memory, meaning that it never writes any temporary files to your disk or other media (unless you choose to save files that it recovers).
Since DiskDigger is a completely self-contained program, it leaves no trace on the computer where it is run. It does not save any settings to the registry. There is nothing to "install," and the entire program is a single executable file.
For advanced users, DiskDigger allows scanning disk image files.

How to Use

Due ricercatori svelano le vulnerabilità dei protocolli di rete

Le tecnologie di rete utilizzate per veicolare il traffico attraverso le dorsali Internet sarebbero vulnerabili ad attacchi su larga scala. E' quanto hanno dichiarato due ricercatori, Enno Rey e Daniel Mendel, che hanno rilasciato anche un particolare software con l'intento di illustrare nella pratica le varie problematiche di sicurezza messe a nudo.

"Intendiamo mostrare come sia possibile condurre attacchi che una volta erano considerati come effettuabili solamente in via teorica quando, in realtà, sono davvero molto concreti", ha dichiarato Rey. "Riteniamo che i modelli implementati in alcune tecnologie ancora oggi ampiamente utilizzate siano ormai superati. E' bene quindi che si acquisisca consapevolezza di come le tecnologie impiegate quotidianamente non siano così sicure come si è soliti ritenere".

Oggetto dello studio di Rey e Mendel sono risultati, in particolare, i protocolli BGP e MPLS. Il Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) è usato per connettere tra loro più router che appartengono a sistemi distinti. Il protocollo poggia sull'impiego e sulla gestione di una tabella di reti IP: lo scopo è quello di rendere disponibili informazioni sulla raggiungibilità delle varie reti. Già in passato Anton Kapela e Alex Pilosov avevano pubblicamente mostrato come sia possibile sfruttare alcune debolezze del protocollo BGP per spiare il traffico di rete ed, eventualmente, reindirizzarlo altrove (ved. queste notizie). Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) è una tecnologia che consente di instradare flussi di traffico tra origine e destinazione attraverso l'uso di identificativi tra coppie di router adiacenti ed operazioni semplici sulle etichette stesse.

Lo strumento software messo a punto da Rey e Mendel rende semplice la modifica dei dati in transito. L'attacco può avere successo perché, ad esempio, MPLS non dispone di alcun meccanismo per proteggere l'integrità degli header che suggeriscono la destinazione ossia dove il pacchetto dati deve essere "recapitato". Nel caso di BGP, secondo quanto dichiarato dai due ricercatori, risulta molto semplice violare il sistema di protezione ancora basato su MD5: in questo modo è possibile aggiungere informazioni, in modo non autorizzato, all'interno delle tabelle di routing.

Rey e Mendel suggeriscono di implementare, prima possibile, adeguati meccanismi di cifratura dei dati in transito.

Usually, the user needs to install client software, which allows him to select the data to backup, the frequency of the backup (schedule) and also to restore data from the server when needed. Typically, the client software compresses and encrypts the data before transferring it over the internet to the remote location. Online is often referred to as 'remote backup', 'internet backup', 'offsite backup' or 'IP backup'.

History

The first online backup software providers arised in the late 90s. However, the service became more and more adopted early in the 21st century. An important trend that influenced the rise of the online backup market is the increasing bandwiths. Online Backup Company "Carbonite" loses customers’ data

The danger of storing your data in the cloud, part n. VC-backed online backup and storage provider Carbonite has lost data of 7,500+ customers who relied on the company to keep their files safe, The Boston Globe unveiled over the weekend.

(note: see updates below, at this point we can't be sure anymore if any data was actually lost or not)

The newspaper gets the information from a lawsuit that was filed by the Boston company last week, alleging that two of its service providers sold it over $3 million worth of defective hardware, linking this to the loss of their customer's data and as a result, bringing "substantial damage" to its business and reputation.

Carbonite is seeking unspecified damages against Promise Technology, which it is suing for unfair and deceptive business practices, fraud and breach of contract, as well as system integrator and IT consultancy firm Interactive Digital Systems (for breach of warranty). The latter company advised and implemented Promise Technology solutions, which were supposed to monitor multiple computer hard drives in order to assure that they were functioning properly.

I think it would be too easy to point to Carbonite for the loss of data if in fact there were serious errors with the software that were unable to be fixed by Promise engineers - something an executive at Promise Technology categorically denies - but the real victims of course are the customers, who will most likely think twice before trusting a cloud-based storage and backup provider with their files from this point forward. I also think it's worth pointing out Carbonite has been caught red-handed earlier this year astroturfing Amazon reviews, as reported by David Pogue of The New York Times.

Update: Carbonite CEO David Friend weighs in:

"The failures of the Promise equipment occurred primarily during 2007. We stopped buying the Promise servers and switched suppliers. We allege that the Promise servers had defective firmware and were not reliable enough for Carbonite's use. We are demanding that Promise compensate us for the cost of replacing their defective products. As for the 7,500 affected customers, their backups were restarted automatically and immediately on our new servers."

Update 2: Friend checked in again to state that no data was lost in the event, but a commentor says otherwise (anyone else affected who would like to weigh in?):

"I actually am one of those customers and I truly lost data (I had a hard drive lock up right when this happened). It was backing up my personal home PC and I lost over a year's worth of pictures. The CEO called me personally, and they gave me free service for awhile, but I definitely have multiple layers of backup now."

This isn't the first data loss horror story we've covered here, and it won't be the last either.

On a sidenote, I'd change my homepage a bit for a while until things cool down if I were Carbonite.

Dopo alcuni mesi di "beta testing", Zend Server raggiunge la sua veste finale (release 4.0.1), sia per ciò che riguarda la versione commerciale che per quanto concerne la "Community Edition" (CE) gratuita.

Zend Server è un "web application server" concepito per ottimizzare l'esecuzione e la gestione di applicazioni PHP, soprattutto negli ambienti ove è indispensabile fidare su un elevato livello di affidabilità e sicurezza, puntando molto anche sulle prestazioni.

Il nuovo prodotto di Zend, azienda che ha il suo "quartier generale" a Cupertino, in California, svolge una duplice funzione: innanzi tutto mette a disposizione degli sviluppatori un ambiente completo e consistente da impiegare durante la realizzazione, la messa a punto ed il testing delle applicazioni PHP; offre inoltre una solida piattaforma installabile sulle macchine server utilizzate "in produzione" per supportare tutti gli script PHP.

Zend Server integra una serie di strumenti che permettono di monitorare le applicazioni PHP segnalando eventuali problemi. La piattaforma è capace di installarsi automaticamente su web server come Apache ed IIS senza richiedere interventi da parte dell'amministratore. Il software, inoltre, offre il supporto diretto per i principali database tra i quali MySQL, Oracle, IBM DB2 e Microsoft SQL Server.

Secondo quanto dichiarato da Eldad Maniv, uno dei responsabili di Zend, la soluzione appena rilasciata consentirebbe di ottenere notevoli benefici in termini di performance e di sicurezza. Zend Server viene configurato con le impostazioni più sicure per la gestione degli script PHP; tuttavia le impostazioni possono essere liberamente modificare attraverso una comoda interfaccia grafica, senza la necessità di dover mai metter mano ad esempio al file php.ini.

"Cache, cache, cache" è ciò che la maggior parte degli esperti risponde se chiedete loro quali possano essere i metodi per velocizzare le applicazioni PHP. In questo senso, Zend Server compie gli sforzi maggiori grazie alle molte funzionalità legate al caching che sono state adottate. Il caching operato da Zend Server si concretizza sia a livello bytecode (Optimizer+) che a livello HTTP (Zend Page Cache).

La versione free ("Community Edition") di Zend Server può essere utilizzata senza limitazioni. Rispetto alla versione a pagamento del prodotto, tuttavia, è sprovvista del meccanismo di caching delle pagine, del sistema per il monitoraggio delle applicazioni PHP, del modulo diagnostico per i problemi eventualmente rilevati, dello strumento che consente l'aggiornamento automatico del pacchetto nonché dell'accesso al supporto tecnico Zend. How to uninstall anything: free apps that get the job done

Description: this article presents three handy free programs designed to remove installed applications from your system: Appremover, PC Decrapifier, and Revo Uninstraller. All three are portable (or, in the case of Revo, have a portable version available).

1- Appremover: uninstalls security applications

Have you ever uninstalled a security application only to discover that related files/folders/registry entries still remain on your computer? For some reason (I cannot put my finger on) this is actually not uncommon when uninstalling various antivirus and security apps. I remember uninstalling Norton AV many (many) years ago only to find traces of it all over my PC; at the time I used a free "Remove Norton" type app that did the job of really removing it completely. Appremover is similar, except it is not simply Norton specific and uninstalls a wide range of security programs.

2- PC Decrapifier: uninstalls many pre-installed trialware/shareware/crapware programs that come pre-installed on PC - in batch.

This one came out a couple of years ago and has become an indispensable part of my repertoire of tools whenever I work on a brand new computer (or, occasionally, when I work on Friends' computers). PC Decrapifier supports a database of trialware programs and/or programs that come pre-installed on many brand name PCs. This database is constantly being updated, so always update or get the latest version of this program from its website when you need to use it.

One thing to note, however, is that there may be some programs on the list that you *may* not want to uninstall, so make sure that you browse the list of apps it found on your computer and uncheck anything you would like to keep before you run. Be especially careful if you've bought a license for a program whose trial version typically comes installed on new PCs (e.g. Adobe Reader,

PC Decrapifier is free for personal use, for commercial use you need to purchase a license. Paid version includes

3- Revo Uninstaller: to say that this one is a replacement for Microsoft's inbuilt Add/Remove is an understatement; it's Add/Remove's distant cousin who discovered a cure for cancer and now spends his time securing medical supplies to needy kids in the third world (when its not writing a freeware blog, that is ;) ).

Freewaregenius 5-Star PickWhat do you do if a program does not have an installer in Add/Remove? Look for an installer in it's "Start Menu" entries first thing, then look in the program folder for an executable that looks like an uninstaller (something like uninstall.exe or unwise.exe). If you don't find one then point Revo to the app (in hunter mode) and select uninstall; it will remove the program and all associated files from the hard drive and will most likely clean all traces of it in the registry (I've done this on occasion with good results). Note: Revo will also uninstall .NET Framework, Java.

Revo's attraction is its combination of form and function; where form is concerned, the program looks pretty and will let you filter your list by typing something in, will let you sort by the date column (or any other column) in detail view, and will display your list of installed programs as icons, which looks really good.

But the function part is even better; Revo will look for and clean all traces of the program on the hard drive and in the registry. It offers 3 uninstall modes (safe, moderate, and advanced), whereby the user can set the level of aggressiveness that Revo will use when looking for traces. I always use "Moderate" scan, and can report that in over a year of usage it has always performed admirably; consistently finding and cleaning up leftover files and registry items and never removing any entries it shouldn't have or otherwise causing any problems. I will recommend, however, that you always take a look at the list of registry entries slated for deletion, especially if uninstalling an app that has a very similar name to another app on your machine (e.g. app 1 is named "file split and merge", whilst app 2 is named "split and merge files" or "Bob's file split and merge").

Microsoft Data Access Components (commonly abbreviated MDAC; also known as Windows DAC) is a framework of interrelated Microsoft technologies that allows programmers a uniform and comprehensive way of developing applications that can access almost any data store.
Its components include: ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), OLE DB, and Open Database Connectivity (ODBC). There have been several deprecated components as well, such as the Microsoft Jet Database Engine, MSDASQL (the OLE DB provider for ODBC), and Remote Data Services (RDS). Some components have also become obsolete, such as the former Data Access Objects API and Remote Data Objects.

The first version of MDAC was released in August 1996. At that time Microsoft stated MDAC was more a concept than a stand-alone program and had no widespread distribution method. Later Microsoft released upgrades to MDAC as web-based redistributable packages. Eventually, later versions were integrated with Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer, and in MDAC 2.8 SP1 they ceased offering MDAC as a redistributable package.

Throughout its history MDAC has been the subject of several security flaws, which led to attacks such as an escalated privileges attack, although the vulnerabilities were generally fixed in later versions and fairly promptly. The current version is 2.8 service pack 2, but the product has had many different versions and many of its components have been deprecated and replaced by newer Microsoft technologies. MDAC is now known as Windows DAC in Windows Vista.

Premessa
Microsoft Document Explorer (DExplore.exe) è l'applicazione a corredo di Visual Studio (sin dalla versione .NET 2002) che consente di visualizzare la documentazione installata sul proprio computer, ossia il cosiddetto insieme delle guide integrate di Visual Studio, nel formato compilato .HxS, secondo lo standard Microsoft Help 2.x. Detto insieme contiene sia la libreria MSDN sia la documentazione aggiuntiva a complemento di altre applicazioni Microsoft o di altri produttori.
Grazie a Document Explorer è possibile avere a disposizione, in un'unica istanza di questo browser, tutta la documentazione installata, senza dover aprire decine di finestre separate, e la possibilità di ricerche su internet.

Quello che forse è meno noto, è che si può interagire con Document Explorer anche tramite codice, dall'interno delle proprie applicazioni, in maniera similare a quanto avviene col servizio di Windows che consente di visualizzare i file della guida compilati in formato .chm (hh.exe). In questo secondo caso, però, si utilizzano alcune funzioni API. Per lavorare con Document Explorer esistono invece diverse possibilità, prevalentemente legate al .NET Framework.
E' possibile, infatti, richiamare Document Explorer secondo le seguenti modalità:

tramite gli assembly di Visual Studio, secondo il concetto di Visual Studio Extensibility, secondo cui è possibile lavorare con Document Explorer solo con Visual Studio in esecuzione;
tramite la libreria dei tipi VsHelp80.Olb, grazie alla quale non è necessario avere Visual Studio in esecuzione;
tramite un progetto macro;
tramite un oggetto VSPackage.

In questo articolo analizzeremo i primi tre punti, mentre tralasceremo l'ultimo, poiché questo richiede conoscenze avanzate della programmazione orientata all'ambiente di sviluppo e degli assembly che mantengono il funzionamento dell'IDE. Per ulteriori approfondimenti sul punto 4, potete scaricare il Visual Studio 2005 SDK e studiare la relativa documentazione.

In considerazione di quanto appena detto, ho predisposto tre sorgenti: un progetto in grado di interagire con Document Explorer mantenendo attivo Visual Studio (chiamato ProgrammingDExplore), un progetto per l'interazione con Document Explorer senza istanze di Visual Studio attive (chiamato ExploitDExplore) e un modulo macro, chiamato HelpModule.vb, per quanto riguarda il punto 3 che precede. Per proseguire nella lettura dell'articolo, pertanto, è consigliabile scaricare i sorgenti di esempio disponibili nell'area download di VB-T&T.

In realtà, l'argomento Document Explorer mi serve più che altro come scusa per illustrarvi tecniche diverse di programmazione, come la creazione di macro via codice e la comprensione degli assembly gestiti che stanno dietro all'IDE di Visual Studio 2005.

L'utilità
A cosa serve interagire con Document Explorer? Poniamo il caso che abbiate sviluppato e distribuito la documentazione compilata a corredo del vostro applicativo in formato .HxS. Ricordando che questo tipo di formato si preferisce qualora realizziate applicazioni o componenti dedicati all'utilizzo in Visual Studio, potreste avere la necessità di implementare il menu "?" per visualizzare tale documentazione. Affinché il vostro utente sia in grado di visualizzare tale documentazione, voi dovete essere in grado di aprirla in Document Explorer da codice.

Scopo di questo articolo, oltre a quello relativo al caso pratico appena detto, è anche quello di illustrarvi alcune tecniche di programmazione un po' più raffinate, che possano farvi capire alcuni concetti di funzionamento dell'IDE di Visual Studio 2005.

My conclusion: all three are very worthy contenders that can hold their own or surpass any heavyweight for-pay antivirus; however Anitvir and Avast are definitely in the first tier, while AVG is a close second tier.

There's been a vigorous debate going on in the little "cbox" message box (in the sidebar) over which freeware antivirus program is best. This posting will explore this issue more closely. The objective is to go beyond the ubiquitous "I have used program x for y years now and it has kept me completely virus free" to a more substantial comparison.

Canon Eos 50D: innovazione reale

Quando venne lanciata la Eos 40D, nell'agosto del 2007, in molti si chiesero quali furono le effettive innovazioni rispetto al modello precedente Eos 30D. Canon aveva aspettato più di un anno per rinnovare il segmento prosumer e la scelta di adottare il live view divise gli appassionati della casa bianco rossa tra i delusi e gli entusiasti.

A distanza di 12 mesi dal lancio della Eos 40D ecco sui banchi dei negozianti l'evoluzione della specie, ovvero la Canon Eos 50D, che promette un balzo in avanti dal punto di vista tecnologico. Il mondo reflex digitale odierno si è fatto più attento agli aspetti di contenimento del rumore, resa alle alte sensibilità e capacità di riprodurre sfumature colore aumentando la resa cromatica, aspetti tenuti in considerazione da tutti i produttori, Canon compresa.

Nelle prossime pagine analizzeremo una delle novità più importanti, rintracciabili a livello del sensore CMOS APS-C da 15,1 Mp. Anticipiamo come Canon abbia concentrato i propri sforzi nella realizzazione di un sensore "gapless", studiato per minimizzare gli spazi tra un fotodiodo e l'altro, ovvero gli elementi sensibili che formano il sensore stesso. Processore di immagine DiGiC IV, nove punti di messa a fuoco e una velocità di scatto di 6,3 fps sono solo alcune delle ulteriori caratteristiche della nuova prosumer Canon che andremo a scoprire lungo questa recensione.

Excellent guide comparing Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, and Plone

Idealware is providing online a report on open source content management systems by comparing Wordpress, Joomla!, Drupal, and Plone. This 60-page independent Idealware report in PDF format provides both an introduction to the topic and a very detailed comparison of the four systems. The report also includes their new directory of the consultants and firms who help nonprofit create websites and implement these Content Management Systems.

The analysis in this report is excellent and provides my favorite type of comparison between content management systems, fair and balanced. The report doesn't try to rank for you which open source CMS is number one but instead intends to provide you the information you need to determine which CMS is best for you and your project.

This guide even has a small section giving other CMS options besides the four mentioned open source content management systems. If you're a mid-sized to large organization that prefers propriety software over open source software, the report even makes a small mention of well known CMS such as Hot Banana, Ektron, CommonSpot and Sitecore. This report clearly shows that the authors understand the type of analysis needed for site owners to pick the best CMS for their organization. This report is current and does not rely on past perceptions of a particular CMS.

PCI Express Technology

Formerly known as 3GIO, PCI Express is the open standards- based successor to PCI and its variants for server- and client-system I/O interconnects. Unlike PCI and PCI-X, which are based on 32- and 64-bit parallel buses, PCI Express uses high-speed serial link technology similar to that found in Gigabit1 Ethernet, Serial ATA (SATA), and Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS). PCI Express reflects an industry trend to replace legacy shared parallel buses with high-speed point-to-point serial buses.

The new bus technology is expected to allow the PCI Express transmission rates to keep pace with processor and I/O advances for the next 10 years or more. Systems with PCI Express will begin appearing around the middle of 2004.

PCI Express has the following advantages over PCI:

Serial technology providing scalable performance.
High bandwidth—Initially, 5-80 gigabits per second (Gbps) peak theoretical bandwidth, depending on the implementation.
Point-to-point link dedicated to each device, instead of the PCI shared bus.
Opportunities for lower latency (or delay) in server architectures, because PCI Express provides a more direct connection to the chip set Northbridge (see Note 2) than PCI-X.
Small connectors and, in many cases, easier implementation for system designers.
Advanced features—Quality of service (QoS) via isochronous channels for guaranteed bandwidth delivery when required, advanced power management, and native hot plug/hot swap support.

PCI Express Basics
These are the most common PCI Express slots: the large one incorporates 16 lanes, while the small one is a single lane connector for simple expansion cards.

Unlike PCI and PCI-X, PCI Express is based on a serial protocol. This means that the interface can get by with a very limited number of wires. In exchange, these are clocked much faster than the parallel busses in order to obtain a high bandwidth. Additionally, that bandwidth can be easily multiplied by merging several PCI Express lanes. The specification provides for five different slot types: x16, x8, x4, x2 and x1, where the "x" is pronounced as "by"; for example, the widest PCIe variant is called "by sixteen".

DMTF Releases OVF 1.0 Standard

PORTLAND, Ore. - March 23, 2009 - The Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), the industry organization bringing the IT industry together to collaborate on systems management standards development, validation, promotion and adoption, today announced the release of version 1.0 of its Open Virtualization Format (OVF) standard. The updated standard extends DMTF's mission to enable interoperability through the creation of systems management standards for virtualized environments.

"The goal of standards development is to enable Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to offer improved products that manage a broader range of their customers' preferred technology platforms," said Cameron Haight, Research Vice President with Gartner. "This is because standards, when designed appropriately, not only prevent ISVs from having to create multiple versions of the same product for each possible environment, but they allow vendors to focus their scare development resources upon delivering higher value features."

Ivar Jacobson: ecco cosa non insegnano ai programmatori

Microsoft, in occasione di una giornata di conferenze riguardanti la programmazione, ha dato spazio sul palco ad un personaggio molto importante, che proprio con Microsoft ha avviato una collaborazione. Stiamo parlando di Ivar Jacobson, famoso per essere uno dei creatori dello Unified Modeling Language, nato con l'obiettivo di unificare alcuni approcci alla programmazione esistenti, formalizzando le best practices, le pratiche, al fine di definire uno standard.

Certo, riconosco che il discorso può non essere del tutto chiaro, così come ammetto il mio imbarazzo unito a soggezione quando mi sono trovato a dover intervistare Mr. Jacobson. Un conto è intervistare personaggi legati al mondo IT in genere, un altro è il mondo della programmazione, di cui sono assolutamente digiuno. Eppure, con mia grande sorpresa e sollievo Mr. Jacobson si è rivelato un ottimo conferenziere (se vi capita, non perdetevelo), che ha preferito descrivere un discorso generale senza scendere nei tecnicismi da me temuti.

Eccomi quindi a riportare a mezzo articolo alcune informazioni che possono essere utili in qualche modo ai programmatori, o a chiunque sia appassionato di questo universo. Il focoso svedese ha impostato la sua brillante conferenza sui problemi legati al software che poi ci si ritrova nel proprio computer, cercando di far capire al pubblico, mediamente molto più informato di me sull'argomento, quali siano le migliori pratiche per uno sviluppo intelligente degli applicativi, elencando anche gli approcci sbagliati o taciuti da chi insegna a programmare.

Un tema molto caro a Ivar Jacobson questo, tanto da dedicargli il titolo della conferenza: "what they don't teach you about software at school", ovvero quello che non vi insegnano a scuola riguardo al software. Ne ha per tutti, Mr. Jacobson, ma l'atteggiamento non è per nulla di supponenza, quanto di reale interesse ad indicare quelli che a detta sua sono le basi per un approccio alla programmazione più ... smart. Non ho volutamente tradotto smart perché è un po' la chiave di tutto, come scoprirete nelle pagine seguenti.

Aggiornare Java all'ultima versione

Java è un linguaggio di programmazione orientato agli oggetti, derivato dal C++ e messo a punto sotto la guida di Sun Microsystems con un lavoro che iniziò già nel 1991. L'annuncio ufficiale del rilascio di Java fu reso nel mese di Maggio 1995.

Tra le perculiarità più importanti di Java vi è il fatto di essere indipendente dalla piattaforma e quindi di essere compatibile con piattaforme differenti (slogan "write once, run everywhere") nonché di essere supportato dai principali browser web.

Un programma Java può essere eseguito su qualsiasi piattaforma hardware-software a patto che sia dotata di un apposito interprete, detto "Java Virtual Machine".

-- Java fu inizialmente rilasciato come Java Development Kit 1.0 (JDK 1.0) che comprende sia Java Runtime (la "Virtual Machine" e le librerie di classi), sia gli strumenti di sviluppo (ad esempio, il compilatore Java).
-- In seguito, Sun Microsystems rese disponibile un pacchetto che integrava esclusivamente gli elementi necessari per eseguire correttamente un'applicazione Java. Tale pacchetto è chiamato Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
Ancora oggi, sebbene Java sia notevolmente cresciuto, con il rilascio di molte nuove versioni, l'utilizzo degli acronimi JDK e JRE per differenziare i due pacchetti è restato invariato.

I programmi Java che possono essere eseguiti da browser web si chiamano applet e sono inseribili nelle pagine Internet utilizzando apposite tag. Per fruire di un'applet Java è sufficiente che sul sistema in uso sia installato il "Java Runtime Environment" (JRE).

Java è ampiamente utilizzato anche sui dispositi mobili come telefoni cellulari. La versione J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition) viene spesso impiegata su telefonini che dispongono di risorse hardware limitate (memoria, storage, etc...).

Molti utenti, tuttavia, pur avendo installato Java sul proprio personal computer (talvolta viene fornito insieme con alcune applicazioni; ad esempio OpenOffice.org), non provvedono ad aggiornarlo tempestivamente e a rimuovere le versioni più datate del pacchetto.
Navigare sul web avendo le applet Java abilitate ed utilizzando una vecchia versione del linguaggio è assolutamente sconsigliato.

Come confermato anche da Secunia, azienda danese che da anni si occupa di sicurezza informatica segnalando la scoperta di nuove vulnerabilità nei vari software disponibili sul mercato, è cosa comune che sui sistemi degli utenti siano presenti versioni ormai superate della "Java Virtual Machine". Circa il 35% degli utenti, a Febbraio 2008, usavano una versione vulnerabile di Java.

Come qualsiasi altra software house, anche Sun rilascia periodicamente degli aggiornamenti di sicurezza per Java in modo tale da correggere tutte le falle di sicurezza via a via scoperte. Alcune di esse, com'è facile accorgersi operando qualche breve ricerca nell'archivio di Secunia (ved. queste pagine), sono considerate particolarmente gravi e possono portare all'esecuzione di codice nocivo nel caso in cui l'utente visiti un sito web maligno, allestito con l'apposito scopo di creare danni, sottrarre informazioni sensibili, rubare credenziali di accesso, installare altri programmi dannosi.

E' facile, quindi, essere vittima di malware non solo quando il sistema operativo o le applicazioni che si utilizzano per comunicare in Rete (browser, client di posta, software per la messaggistica, etc...) non sono aggiornati ma anche quando non si sta adoperando l'ultima versione della Java Virtual Machine.

Un pò discutibile è anche il comportamento dell'installer di Java che non provvede a disinstallare le versioni precedenti della virtual machine o che comunque non informa l'utente circa la presenza, sul sistema, di release ormai superate. E' cosa quindi abbastanza comune trovare sul sistema molteplici versioni di Java, dalle più vetuste 1.3 ed 1.4 alle più recenti 1.5 e 1.6.

Innanzi tutto, per verificare se il browser web è in grado di eseguire applet Java, è sufficiente collegarsi con la pagina ufficiale di test elaborata da Sun.
Immediatamente sotto il paragrafo "Test your JVM", dovrebbero comparire tutti i dettagli relativi alla JRE installata insieme con un'immagine animata. Qualora ciò non dovesse accadere, è possibile che la JRE non risulti installata sul personal computer oppure che l'esecuzione delle applet Java venga in qualche modo bloccata (da browser oppure attraverso le funzionalità messe a disposizione dai più moderni software "personal firewall" che integrano funzionalità di filtro dei contenuti inseriti nelle pagine Internet).

Come secondo passo, è bene controllare all'interno del Pannello di controllo di Windows che non siano presenti versioni "datate" di Java. Diversamente, è caldamente consigliato disinstallare tutte le versioni della Java Virtual Machine non aggiornate. In figura è rappresentato il caso di un utente che ha sul proprio sistema più versioni di Java.

Nel caso in cui il normale processo di disinstallazione delle precedenti versioni di Java non dovesse andare a buon fine, suggeriamo di ricorrere all'utilità Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup. Si tratta di uno strumento che provvede ad eliminare dal registro di sistema tutti i riferimenti non validi a procedure d'installazione di Java. Il software, gratuito, è scaricabile attraverso il link presente in questa pagina.

Prima di procedere, è comunque bene accertarsi che nessuna applicazione desktop richieda una versione di Java specifica. Non è infrequente, infatti, imbattersi in software gestionali che, per poter funzionare correttamente, necessitano (lo dichiarano esplicitamente) di una ben precisa versione di Java. Ciò, di regola, non dovrebbe comunque accadere nel caso di un'applicazione Java ben scritta che dovrebbe essere sempre adeguata, anche mediante il rilascio di aggiornamenti, all'ultima versione disponibile della "Virtual Machine".

Gli utenti che sono costretti ad utilizzare vecchie versioni di JRE per consentire l'esecuzione di applicazioni piuttosto datate (cosa piuttosto comune con alcuni software di tipo fiscale, installati, ad esempio, presso gli studi commercialisti), dovrebbero provvedere a disabilitare l'esecuzione delle applet Java dal browser in uso (Internet Explorer, Firefox, ...). Nel caso di Firefox, è sufficiente disattivare la casella Attiva Java presente nella sezione Contenuti (menù Strumenti, Opzioni del browser). Analoga casella è disponibile, in Internet Explorer, accedendo al menù Strumenti, Opzioni Internet quindi cliccando sulla scheda Avanzate (sezione Java (Sun)).
E' bene ricorrere a questa pagina per verificare se le applet Java siano o meno eseguite.

Attraverso la finestra di configurazione di Java (Pannello di controllo di Windows, icona Java, scheda Avanzate, Java predefinito per browser), è poi possibile disattivare il caricamento del plug-in da parte dei vari browser.

Java: Sun rilascia le versioni aggiornate

Sun Microsystems ha da poco rilasciato gli aggiornamenti che consentono di risolvere, tra l'altro, una serie di vulnerabilità di sicurezza scoperte all'interno di Java JRE (Java Runtime Environment).
Tutti gli utenti sono invitati ad aggiornarsi alle versioni più recenti (ved. il sito ufficiale), esenti da problemi. Per la versione 6.0 di Java, Sun ha reso disponibile l'"update 13". Contemporaneamente, è stato rilasciato anche un aggiornamento destinato ai possessori della precedente versione 5.0 (1.5.0.18; ved. questa pagina per il download).

JRE (acronimo di "Java Runtime Environment") permette al sistema operativo di eseguire applicazioni sviluppate nel linguaggio Java. Tali software possono essere distribuiti nella forma "stand alone", ossia eseguibili localmente sul personal computer in uso oppure integrati nelle pagine web (si parla di "applet" Java).
E' possibile verificare la versione di JRE eventualmente installata ed in uso sul proprio sistema, collegandosi con questa pagina. Immediatamente sotto il paragrafo "Test your JVM", dovrebbero comparire tutti i dettagli relativi alla JRE installata insieme con un'immagine animata.
Qualora ciò non dovesse accadere, è possibile che la JRE non risulti installata sul personal computer oppure che l'esecuzione delle applet Java venga in qualche modo bloccata (da browser oppure attraverso le funzionalità messe a disposizione dai più moderni software "personal firewall" che integrano funzionalità di filtro dei contenuti inseriti nelle pagine Internet).

Java è un linguaggio estremamente potente: se si preferisce evitare del tutto di imbattersi in applet Java potenzialmente nocive, è possibile disattivarne l'esecuzione da browser (in Internet Explorer, menù Strumenti, Opzioni Internet, scheda "Avanzate", sezione "Java"; in Mozilla Firefox, menù Strumenti, Opzioni, scheda Contenuti, disabilitare la casella Attiva Java) oppure da software firewall. Disattivando le applet, si potranno comunque eseguire applicazioni sviluppate in Java sul personal computer.
Sono infatti un sempre maggior numero le applicazioni che poggiano su Java (soprattutto quelle contabili e gestionali): uno dei vantaggi principali deriva infatti dal fatto che JRE può essere installato su piattaforme completamente diverse (Windows, Linux, Solaris).

E' inoltre sempre bene accertarsi che sul sistema in uso non siano presenti versioni "datate" di Java. Per tutti i dettagli sulla gestione delle installazioni delle varie versioni di Java, vi suggeriamo di fare riferimento a questo nostro articolo.

Le vulnerabilità risolte con il rilascio delle ultime versioni della piattaforma Java riguardano un'incorretta inizializzazione di connessioni LDAP, un errore in "Java Web Start" che potrebbe essere sfruttato da un aggressore per eseguire codice nocivo invitando l'utente ad aprire un file JAR "maligno", una lacuna che potrebbe favorire l'utilizzo di codice in grado di permettere l'accesso a porte locali normalmente "bloccate", una serie di bug legati alla gestione di file PNG e GIF - potenzialmente utilizzabili per eseguire codice dannoso -, alcuni errori nel plug-in Java che potrebbero facilitare l'esecuzione di codice con versioni precedenti di JRE, eventualmente installate sul sistema. Le più recenti versioni di Java correggono anche altre problematiche di sicurezza che potrebbero agevolare attacchi DoS (Denial of Service), il superamento di alcune restrizioni, l'esecuzione di codice in modalità remota.

Un'applicazione è detta "portabile" quando è in grado di funzionare da qualunque supporto rimovibile (ad esempio, CDROM, chiavette USB, memorie flash, floppy disk,...) senza richiedere l'installazione sul disco fisso. Com'è ovvio, un'applicazione "portabile" potrà essere eseguita esclusivamente sui sistemi operativi per i quali ne è garantita la compatibilità. Tuttavia, una vera applicazione "portabile" - una volta avviata dal supporto rimovibile prescelto – non opererà alcuna modifica alla configurazione del sistema. Il software, ad esempio, non installerà file aggiuntivi sul disco fisso né varierà la configurazione del registro di sistema o di altre aree che regolano il funzionamento di Windows.

Le applicazioni sviluppate per il sistema operativo di Microsoft, in genere, non sono portabili dal momento che le procedure d'installazione aggiungono spesso dei file nelle cartelle di sistema ed interagiscono pesantemente con il registro. Proprio il registro di Windows è utilizzato, sin dall'uscita delle prime versioni del sistema operativo, per memorizzare informazioni sulla configurazione di ogni singolo programma installato. Inoltre, nel caso in cui sul sistema siano attivati più account, nel registro sono di solito conservati dati differenti per ciascun utente che utilizza Windows così come ogni singola applicazione.

Un'applicazione, per divenire "portabile", deve quindi astenersi dall'utilizzare il registro di sistema ed evitare il caricamento di qualunque file sul sistema in uso che, alla chiusura del programma, non deve risultare in alcun modo modificato. In genere, quindi, un'applicazione portabile provvede a memorizzare file temporanei e file di configurazione direttamente nel supporto rimovibile.

In queste pagine presentiamo PortableApps, una delle piattaforme più valide per la gestione delle applicazioni portabili. Uno dei principali vantaggi derivanti dall'utilizzo di soluzioni come PortableApps consiste nel fatto di avere modo di portare sempre con sé, ad esempio una semplice e sempre più comune chiavetta USB, gli elenchi dei propri siti web preferiti (bookmarks), gli archivi della posta elettronica, modelli e documenti pronti per essere editati senza la necessità di installare alcunché.

La soluzione di PortableApps

Per avere a disposizione una collezione delle più apprezzate ed utilizzate applicazioni opensource all'interno, ad esempio, della propria chiavetta USB, è possibile impiegare la soluzione proposta da PortableApps.com. Il sito, oltre ad offrire le ultime versioni portabili delle più famose applicazioni, mette a disposizione un ottimo gestore per l'avvio dei vari software: si tratta di una comoda interfaccia, che ricorda da vicino il menù "Start" di Windows, attraverso la quale si possono eseguire i programmi, eliminarli oppure aggiungerne di nuovi.
Il componente software che permette l'avvio e la gestione delle applicazioni, può essere memorizzato su qualunque supporto rimovibile, insieme con i programmi in versione "portabile".

Per installare PortableApps sull'unità rimovibile prescelta, è sufficiente prelevare il pacchetto d'interesse (Platform only, Suite light, Suite standard), eseguirlo quindi seguire la procedura passo-passo. Per poter avere a disposizione sia il gestore dei programmi sia le applicazioni in lingua italiana, suggeriamo di utilizzare il pacchetto d'installazione "Platform only", scegliere l'italiano infine specificare la lettera identificativa corrispondente all'unità all'interno della quale si desidera inserire le applicazioni portabili.

Per avviare il "manager" delle applicazioni di PortableApps, sarà poi sufficiente fare doppio clic sul file eseguibile StartPortableApps.exe contenuto nell'unità rimovibile. Nel caso in cui la funzionalità "autorun" di Windows dovesse risultare abilitata, PortableApps verrà automaticamente avviato grazie all'aggiunta di un apposito file autorun.inf nella directory radice dell'unità stessa.

Il menù che apparirà a video, sul lato destro dello schermo, permetterà di avviare le varie applicazioni portabili, accedere alle cartelle Documenti, Musica, Immagini e Video create nell'unità rimovibile, effettuare il backup del contenuto del supporto, accedere alle opzioni ed avviare delle ricerche locali o sul web.

La versione "Platform only" di PortableApps ha la prerogativa di essere multilingua e quindi di permettere la visualizzazione dell'interfaccia interamente in italiano. In questo caso, però, non verrà proposta alcuna applicazione portabile in elenco: l'utente dovrà aggiungere manualmente quelle di proprio interesse.

Il menù principale di PortableApps. Nel caso in cui si sia installata la versione "Platform only" multilingua del pacchetto, le applicazioni portabili dovranno essere aggiunte manualmente.

Utilizzare la suite PortableApps in modo sicuro

Per utilizzare in tutta sicurezza l'unità rimovibile all'interno della quale si installa la suite PortableApps, è bene impiegare alcune semplici precauzioni. In primo luogo, è indispensabile che sul personal computer sia installato un valido software antivirus. Nel caso della chiavetta USB o dell'unità PortableApps, è caldamente consigliata l'installazione di un programma antivirus portabile come ClamWin accertandosi di mantenere sempre aggiornate i suoi archivi delle definizioni virali.
Va inoltre tenuto presente che, nel caso in cui si dovesse connettere l'unità PortableApps ad un sistema sul quale siano presenti dei malware, anche il disco rimovibile potrebbe essere a sua volta infettato. E' quindi sempre opportuno verificare con attenzione che sul sistema al quale si prevede di connettere l'unità rimovibile, ad esempio la chiavetta USB PortableApps, non siano presenti delle minacce. Una soluzione può essere quella di avviare preventivamente una scansione con Prevx CSI, strumento che permette di rilevare qualsiasi genere di malware.

Prima di rimuovere l'unità di PortableApps è indispensabile cliccare sul pulsante "eject", così come spiegato più avanti: è assolutamente sconsigliato disconnettere l'unità disco senza prima aver chiuso tutte le applicazioni portabili.

Come suggeriscono gli stessi autori della suite PortableApps, è anche ragionevole effettuare – su base periodica – un backup dei dati presenti nell'unità disco ricorrendo alla funzionalità integrata nel menù del programma.

Visual Lightbox: per creare gallerie fotografiche in pochi clic

Sia in ambito aziendale che domestico, quando si ha a che fare con una serie di immagini prodotte, ad esempio, servendosi di una fotocamera digitale, può essere utile produrre una sorta di "galleria". Visual Lightbox è un software che si occupa di sovrintendere l'intera procedura senza costringere l'utente a digitare una singola riga di codice.

Inviando a Visual Lightbox (il programma supporta il "drag&drop") una serie di fotografie, il software provvederà sia a generare le versioni ridotte delle immagini - da visualizzare sotto forma di "miniature" -, sia a produrre le pagine web, in formato html, che permettono di visualizzare le varie foto.

Il "pacchetto" che Visual Lightbox è in grado di generare potrà essere pubblicato in Rete per condividere le proprie foto online oppure distribuito via e-mail od altri supporti di memorizzazione (si pensi all'esigenza, comune in molte realtà aziendali, di produrre rapidamente dei cataloghi in formato elettronico).
Visual Lightbox integra un client FTP: ciò significa che il materiale prodotto potrà essere inviato online, ad esempio sul proprio server FTP, senza abbandonare il programma.

Il software integra inoltre alcune funzionalità di base per la modifica delle fotografie: dall'interfaccia di Visual Lightbox si possono ridimensionare e ruotare le foto oltre ad aggiungere delle etichette descrittive.

Il funzionamento di Visual Lightbox è molto semplice: dopo aver avviato il programma, è sufficiente trascinare nella finestra principale un insieme di file oppure intere cartelle contenenti delle immagini. Il software proporrà una versione di anteprima di tutte le foto. In alternativa, è possibile cliccare sul pulsante Add images to gallery presente nella barra degli strumenti.

Cliccando sul pulsante a forma di "ingranaggio" (Edit gallery properties), si può indicare al programma se le foto debbano essere automaticamente ridimensionate o meno. Affinché sulle immagini in versione ingrandita non venga apportato alcun intervento, è sufficiente scegliere l'opzione Do not resize dal menù a tendina Image resolution. In alternativa è possibile scegliere la dimensione desiderata.

Le impostazioni che permettono di agire sulla qualità dell'immagine ridimensionata e l'opzione che permette di eliminare il riferimento a Visual Lightbox in calce alle foto sono fruibili solo acquistando la versione a pagamento del prodotto.

Gli altri due pulsanti della finestra delle proprietà della galleria consentono, rispettivamente, di scegliere la tipologia di presentazione "slide show" che deve essere proposta all'utente e di specificare dove, in modo predefinito, Visual Lightbox dovrà memorizzare quanto prodotto.

Per avviare la procedura di creazione della propria galleria fotografia, è sufficiente cliccare il pulsante Publish gallery della barra degli strumenti indicando quindi se si vuole memorizzare tutti i file in locale (Publish to folder) oppure se si preferisce caricarli subito online via FTP.
La casella Index file name dà modo di specificare l'appellativo della home page: la prima pagina attraverso la quale sarà possibile successivamente accedere all'intera galleria.

La galleria fotografia così semplicemente realizzata potrà infine essere visualizzata con un qualsiasi browser web, sia in un contesto di lavoro locale, sia online.

Esplorando il contenuto della cartella "engine" di Visual Lightbox e del file indice, si noterà immediatamente come il programma abbia automaticamente provveduto a generare tutto il codice JavaScript e i fogli di stile (CSS) necessari per la corretta visualizzazione della galleria fotografia.

Visual Lightbox è un programma distribuito gratuitamente ed utilizzabile, sempre a titolo non oneroso, per scopi non commerciali. La versione più completa, destinata a qualunque genere di impiego, può essere invece acquistata previo versamento della quota di registrazione.

Seagate mostra SATA3, sino a 6Gbps da un solo disco

Seagate Technology e AMD hanno dato dimostrazione nel corso della giornata di ieri della nuova generazione di interfaccia Serial ATA con velocità di trasferimento di 6 gigabit al secondo. Il nuovo standard, ratificato dal Serial ATA International Organization, prende il nome di SATA3 e va ad affiancarsi alle precedenti interfacce SATA e SATA2.

Joan Motsinger, vice president of personal systems marketing and strategy per Seagate, ha dichiarato: "L'interfaccia SATA a 6Gb/s risponde alla domanda per PC ad elevata larghezza di banda. Seagate ha una lunga tradizione di essere la prima a giungere sul mercato con nuove tecnologie, come l'interfaccia Serial ATA, il perpendicular recording e i drive self-encrypting ed è lieta di collaborare con AMD per tenere la prima dimostrazione pubblica della tecnologia SATA 6Gb/s".

Per meglio contestualizzare la notizia è importante segnalare che, attualmente, sul mercato sono presenti dispositivi con interfaccia SATA o SATA2, in grado di garantire una banda di 1,5Gbps o 3Gbps, a seconda delle specifiche. Nonostante questo limite fisico è pressochè impossibile trovare soluzioni in grado di saturare la banda dei 3Gbps (spesso approssimati a 300MBps): a oggi, i dispositivi più performanti, come i Solid State Drive di fascia alta, difficilmente superano i 250MBps.

La nuova interfaccia Serial ATA-600 permette di arrivare ad una velocità massima teorica di oltre 600 MB al secondo, mantiene retrocompatibilità con le tecnologie SATA 150 e SATA 300 e fa uso degli stessi connettori impiegati dalle precedenti versioni dell'interfaccia SATA per rendere l'integrazione ed il passaggio alla nuova tecnologia il più semplice possibile. La nuova tecnologia Serial ATA-600 promette inoltre una migliore efficienza delle tecniche di Native Command Queuing.

La dimostrazione è stata condotta da Seagate e AMD con due dischi Barracuda della serie 7200.12, uno con la nuova interfaccia Serial ATA-600 ed uno con l'interfaccia Serial ATA-300 ed entrambi installati sul medesimo sistema di test. Il sistema è stato realizzato impiegando una piattaforma AMD in versione di prototipo e con supporto, ovviamente, alla nuova interfaccia SATA 600. La soluzione Barracuda con interfaccia SATA-300 ha mostrato un transfer rate di 250MB/s mentre la soluzione Barracuda SATA-600 ha raggiunto un picco di 550MB al secondo.

"L'interfaccia SATA 6Gb/s sarà commercializzata dapprima con gli hard disk da 3,5 pollici con velocità di rotazione di 7200rpm. La nuova interfaccia può operare tranquillamente anche con dispositivi SSD, i quali potranno trarre vantaggio dalla più elevata velocità di trasferimento dati. Tuttavia il mercato delle soluzioni SSD è molto condizionato dai costi e per questo motivo nel mercato SSD avrà precedenza l'interfaccia SAS a 6Gb/s" ha dichiarato Marc Noblitt, senior marketing I/O development manager per Seagate.

AMD ha affermato che supporterà tale tecnologia a partire dai propri chipset 750, mentre secondo Seagate i primi esemplari di hard disk SATA3 potranno arrivare già verso la fine dell'anno.

AMD Opteron Shanghai: quad core ora a 45 nanometri

13-nov-2008 In anticipo di un trimestre rispetto a quanto inizialmente comunicato, nella giornata odierna AMD presenta la propria prima cpu costruita con tecnologia produttiva a 45 nanometri.

Parliamo ovviamente delle nuove soluzioni Opteron Quad Core note con il nome in codice di Shanghai, che prenderanno il posto delle soluzioni Opteron Quad Core note con il nome in codice di Barcelona presentate nel mese di Settembre 2007.

Citrix to release a free platform for desktops: XenWorkstation

By now it should be clear that Citrix will do everything possible to keep its leadership in the application virtualization space and increase its relevance in the hardware virtualization space.

The first step was giving away XenServer (with Live Migration, Resource Pools and much more) for free.

The second step will be releasing a free virtualization platform for the desktops: XenWorkstation.

Please note that this has nothing to do with the client hypervisor that Citrix is developing with Intel.
This is a type-2 version (or hosted VMM) of Xen that will run on consumer hardware, exactly like VMware Player/Workstation/Fusion, Parallels Workstation/Desktop, Sun VirtualBox or Microsoft Virtual PC.
And Citrix may release it as soon as next week according to virtualization.info sources.

Xen will run as a kernel module and will be available for Windows and Mac OS X hosts.

A part of the VMware early success depend on Workstation: the product is so good that spread across the world and crawled into the biggest corporations without passing through long enterprise sale.
System and software engineers introduces the culture of VMware inside their companies using Workstation on daily basis for simple tasks: testing a new product or OS, developing code, separating the private and the business workspace, etc.

Citrix badly need to build a reputation in the virtualization community. And a free XenWorkstation may be another good way to do so.

IE7Pro: a Swiss Army Knife of add-ons for Internet Explorer

IE7Pro is a free add-on for Internet Explorer that introduces a lot of features and tweaks to make your IE experience more useful. IE7Pro includes tabbed browsing management, spell check, inline search, super drag and drop, crash recovery, a proxy switcher, mouse gestures, a history browser, a web accelerator, and a number of other useful functions. It also supports a Greasemonkey-like User Scripts platform and user plug-ins.

We all hail Firefox for it's customizability, the many great add-ons that it supports, and for greasemonkey! For those who use Internet Explorer and may have been disappointed by the lack of good add-ons, IE7Pro promises (and delivers) on many items that are on your wish list and provides a much enriched web experience, all within a single, fast install. Some notes on this program below:

The user interface: right-click the IE7Pro icon in the statusbar in order to access the various functions (many of these also support keyboard shortcuts as well).
Mix and match what you like: if you're concerned about adding too many features and options if you install IE7pro you need not fear. One of the coolest features about IE7Pro is that it has a plugin-architecture which enables you to activate the features that you want and disable those you don't.

IE7Pro offers a great many features, so I will not list them all. Instead the ones I will mention here are (a) features that I absolutely love, and (b) features that I really, really, like but that should have been better implemented (and that I am wishing they would revisit).

Eleven Twelve IE7Pro features that I really like:

IEscripts: similar to Greasemonkey for Firefox.You can add user scripts to tweak how you view certain website(s) or to provide certain functions. Many scripts come with their own installers such as the GMail CSS skin,YouTube downloader, Myspace Notifier and many others. What this means to you is that you can create your own scripts or, if you're not a coder, you can visit this site for many useful downloadible user scripts.
Tab History: maintains a list of your history of visited tabs that you can can use to quickly re-access any recently visited site (you can optionally add this to IE's context menu).
Form filler: this is a full-fledged auto-password and form completion alternative to Keepass or Alpass. It is also local, in case you are uncomfortable using an online password manager such as Lastpass (which is actually my current favorite). It takes a bit of manual setting up at first as it does not auto-detect forms, but generally it works well. Also does not pre-fill forms but can be prompted to do so using a hotkey. It is the sheer simplicity and straightforward-ness of this one that I find attractive.
Clear privacy data: using a single click. Works well. An alternative to, say, Click&Clean or Cachepal. Cleans all areas that contain information on your internet activity such as your browsing history, cookies, forms, etc. Also included is an "AutoClear upon browser exit" option which can be very useful.
Proxy switcher: simple and works very well.
Show password on mouseover: a reader-created script that simply displays the password underneath the asterisks. This can be a lifesaver, and is the first one of its kind out of many that I tried that actually worked for me.
Mini Download Manager: allows you to pause/resume downloads, and to keep a record of your downloads and the URLs whence they originated. If you are not interested in a full-fledged download manager/accelerator such as Orbit Downloader or Flashget (which can be somewhat intrusive and may introduce P2P features that some people might want to avoid).
SpellChecker: quickly correct your typos within browser-based forms. Uses the open source Aspell. Works well.
Session Manager: allows you to save the currently opened configuration of sites/tabs as a session to be retrieved and resumed at a future point (similar to say, IESessions, but I kind of prefer this one).
Resize IE window: to 800×600, 1024×768, 1280×1084, or user-defined. Perfect for webmasters, developers, and designers who want to quickly see what their sites look like under different resolution settings (1024×768 being the most widespread).
FasterIE: with this enabled you can expect some speed optimizations to Internet Explorer. I couldn't measure this myself, but am putting this feature on the list anyway.
AdBlocker & FlashBlocker: similar to AdBlock Plus for Firefox. Blocks ads on all sites, but you can manually add filters to it to enable them on certain sites if you want to.

Il malware di nuova generazione non può essere più combattuto con le stesse armi che sono state utilizzate per anni, in passato. Gli obiettivi a cui guardano gli sviluppatori di malware sono radicalmente mutati ed oggi questo tipo di attività ha finalità pressoché esclusivamente economiche (si punta alla sottrazione di dati personali, di informazioni sensibili, di dati di autenticazione per l'accesso a servizi finanziari, all'estorsione di denaro). Per raggiungere questi scopi illeciti è necessario che il malware passi inosservato all'utente: gli sviluppatori di componenti nocivi, quindi, sono sempre più dediti a mettere a punto attacchi che coinvolgono, di volta in volta, un numero piuttosto ristretto di sistemi abbinando sempre più spesso l'uso di tecniche rootkit: è un modo, quest'ultimo, per nascondere più efficacemente elementi dannosi. Il malware viene infatti nascosto all'interno di un altro contenitore "ostile", capace di creare una sorta di barriera difficilmente penetrabile utilizzando soluzioni antivirus di tipo tradizionale.
Ed ecco che oggi, allora, l'antivirus evolve in un'entità più completa che integra funzionalità di analisi del sistema a più basso livello per rilevare l'attività di componenti rootkit. Contemporaneamente, sempre più soluzioni per la sicurezza stanno abbracciando il concetto di "intelligenza collettiva": il singolo personal computer non è più considerato come un oggetto a sé stante ma diviene un elemento essenziale per collaborare nell'opera di individuazione di nuovi malware, compresi quelli che infettano un limitato numero di sistemi. In quest'ottica, la sicurezza viene sempre più intesa come servizio. L'intero processo di isolamento e raccolta del malware, classificazione e risoluzione del problema tende ad essere eseguito online: dopo una prima analisi sul sistema locale, nel caso in cui vengano rilevati file sospetti, gli oggetti potenzialmente nocivi sono trasmessi ai server del produttore antivirus. Qui, tutta una serie di procedure automatizzate si fanno carico dell'analisi approfondita di ogni campione pervenuto senza impattare negativamente sulle performance del sistema dell'utente. Gli stessi server remoti si occupano di produrre e distribuire aggiornamenti per le firme virali da distribuire a tutti gli utenti: in questo modo è subito possibile fidare del massimo livello di protezione anche nei confronti di malware nuovi, apparsi ad esempio soltanto su poche decine di sistemi.

Un altro concetto che sta prendendo piede tra i produttori di soluzioni per la sicurezza, consiste nel puntare molto sulla scansione di aree più limitate del sistema operativo. Fatta salva l'opportunità di mantenere sempre attivo il controllo in tempo reale di file e cartelle, i prodotti antimalware integrano nuove funzionalità che si occupano di sorvegliare gli interventi applicati su aree particolarmente delicate di Windows. Sono infatti queste le zone più attaccate dai software nocivi: è bene quindi tenere maggiormente d'occhio queste aree piuttosto che effettuare frequentemente attività di scansione dispendiose sia in termini di tempo, sia per quanto riguarda l'impatto sulle performance.

Sempre più prodotti, inoltre, affiancano anche l'utilizzo dell'analisi comportamentale. Grazie a questo approccio, il software antimalware può individuare applicazioni potenzialmente pericolose sulla base del comportamento tenuto ovvero delle azioni operazioni sulla configurazione del sistema operativo.

La maggior parte delle suite guarda oggi anche al wireless. Spesso, infatti, l'utente meno esperto non si accorge di avere posto in essere una connessione senza fili insicura che di fatto potrebbe essere utilizzata anche da persone non autorizzate. Gran parte dei prodotti recensiti fornisce quindi specifiche informazioni sulla tipologia di connessione che si sta impiegando, evidenziando così eventuali problematiche di sicurezza (uso di una connessione wireless non protetta, che non utilizza un algoritmo crittografico valido o che comunque risulta pericolosa).

Con lo scopo di ridurre ulteriormente i rischi derivanti dalla navigazione in Rete con un sistema non adeguatamente protetto, i produttori delle varie suite per la sicurezza, inoltre, sono sempre più propensi ad inserire funzionalità che provvedano a controllare la presenza delle patch e degli aggiornamenti critici per sistema operativo ed applicazioni principali.

PDF to Word Free: web service that delivers free, high quality PDF to DOC conversions

Description: PDF to Word Free is a free web service that offers high-quality conversions of PDF files to DOC or RTF formats that can be used in Microsoft word or other Rich Text Editors. It lets you upload PDF files through a web interface and will then send the converted file via email as an attachment.

I have looked at a number of free PDF to DOC/RTF conversion options (see the previously published comparative test). I will say straight off the bat that this is the most impressive free conversion service that I have come across; their slogan "the most accurate PDF to Word converter", at least when it comes to free conversion services, is right on the money. I will qualify this statement a little but by saying that this is still in private beta and therefore it is hard to determine whether it will eventually suffer from some of the reliability and/or server overload issues that afflict some other similar services (such as Koolwire which I have recommended elsewhere).

Please note that the developers have generously offered to make private-beta invites available for Freewaregenius readers. Check the "registration" section at the bottom of this posting under "Compatibility" for the invite code.

I used this service to convert a number of documents that contain a number of elements: images, tables, hyperlinks, bullets, numbered-lists, and various text formatting. Here are more notes on this service (as well as results):

Max uploadable file size: is 10 megs. For larger files you might want to split these into manageable parts using something like PDF Split and Merge or PDFTK Builder.
Performance: very fast. The email with the converted file arrived in a manner of minutes. It would be interesting to see if this will change once the service is out of private beta and is handling a higher level of traffic and conversion requests.
Privacy policy: I am paraphrasing their privacy policy which can be found here. It promises that your files will not be looked at by a human at any point and that they will be deleted as soon as they are converted and emailed. Also promises that your email would be used solely to send your files and for no other reason.

Conversion results:

Image handling: was excellent. The images were imported and placed correctly within the document (even for images inside tables). No non-image elements such as tables or formatting were converted to images (which sometimes happens in other programs/services).
Tables: handles tables perfectly; the DOC file actually contained an editable table in the right place. This is the only free service/program of its kind that does this as far as I know.
Handling of text and/or text boxes: produced a continuous text uninterrupted by carriage returns at the end of each line and without being dispersed into random floating text boxes (all of which may be encountered in other conversion services). The resulting text is perfectly suited for editing with MS Word or a similar editor.
Handling of text formatting: easily the best I have ever seen. Shading in tables was handled correctly, as was font style and color. Most bulleted points and numbered list were correct, although there were some discrepancies here but they were few and far between. It even correctly created working hyperlinks that correspond to the original PDF.
Handling of special characters: I frequently get asked about a PDF to DOC converter that can handle foreign characters (such as Russian) correctly. I did not test for this myself so please let me know how this service fares in this respect if you test it yourself.

The verdict: in terms of conversion quality this is hands down the best free PDF to DOC/RTF converter that I have seen; there is simply nothing that comes close. What remains to be seen, however, is how reliable the service will be once it is officially launched and inundated with conversion requests. I am hopeful that they will handle the logistics with the same care and attention that they have poured into the product itself. Simply terrific!

Registration: use the invite code "nitro" and a working email address to register (you may need to wait up to an hour or so). If the invite code does not work then it is probably because they've maxed out on beta invites they are giving out and you may need to wait for the official launch.

WinSCP - Free SFTP, FTP and SCP client for Windows

Each has its advantages and disadvantages, while FTP has one big disadvantage, being insecure. This document contains a comparison to help you to decide which is most appropriate for your needs. Change or Delete System Drive Letter via Registry to Remove Conflict USB or FireWire Drive Letter

In Windows operating system especially Windows XP, when plug in external USB or FireWire mass storage device such as USB key, flash drive, portable harddrive, the drive is not been assigned a drive letter by the system, hence the USB drive or FireWire drive is not showing in Explorer and no AutoPlay or AutoRun window pops up, although the device has been detected, in Safely Remove Hardware (show device but with no drive letter) wizard. The cause is probably due to 'stupid' behavior of XP where it won't find an available letter from free letters pool when the USB or FireWire external drive which has previously mounted and assigned a drive letter is been inserted to computer USB or FireWire port again, but that previously allocated drive letter has been taken up and used by another storage devices. Another possible reason is all 26 letters in alphabet has been used, but this situation is rare and unlikely.

There is a solution to USB or FireWire drive not showing in system error. However, the disconnect conflicted storage device to free up the drive letter fix may not practicable or usable by some, such as computer which are on a network or system running data transfer activity to all its drive assignments continuously flow without stopping, and thus disconnect or reassigning any mapped drives, networked drives, removable drives or other storage drives is not an option.

In this situation, there is another workaround hack to fix the no USB or FireWire drive issue. The workaround fix relies on the registry tweak below to change the drive letter that has been previously assigned to the mounted USB or FireWire portable mobile flash or hard disk drive. Or if users wish, can opt to delete any reference to the detected drives by the device so that when the storage device is plugged in again, the whole drive letter assignment will be start from fresh, and clean.

Login to Windows as an Administrator.
Open Registry Editor by typing regedit (or regedt32.exe in older Windows prior to XP) in Run command of Start Menu and then press Enter.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
Optional step which not required in Windows XP

or later, right click on MountedDevices, then select Permissions. You can also click Permissions from the Security menu.
Optional step which not required in Windows XP or later, check the option to make sure that Administrators have full control to the registry key. Change and revert back this setting when you are finished with the reset of the steps.
If you run above 2 steps in OS earlier than Windows XP, quit regedt32.exe and run regedit.exe.
Also in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices registry branch selected, in the right pane, find and locate a registry value which represents the troubled USB or FireWire drive. The registry key should have the name that resembles the format of \DosDevice\X: where X can be any alphabet letter which corresponding to your physical system drive letter.

Here's a guidelines that you can follow to quickly determine which registry key is linked to your conflicted drive letter:
- Exclude \DosDevice\A: and \DosDevice\B: which normally reserved for floppy disk drives.
- Exclude \DosDevice\C: which normally is the system root drive.
- If you have more than one fixed hard disk drives, then any drive letters that are using by them is not possible linked again, UNLESS the additional hard disk drive is added AFTER you first use the USB or FireWire device that now unable to show.
- Same case with CD-ROM or DVD-ROM optical drive as above reasoning.
- If you have inserted and mounted a lot of thumbdrives, USB flask drive, or external hard disks before, you will likely still see a lot of remaining registry values that you won't know which is which. In this case, double click on each remaining registry key values to view its binary data. Inside the binary data, there will be trace of the name of the device that this registry key represents. For example, figure below shows a Sandisk Cruzer micro USB flash drive.
  
  With this information, search for a registry value that contains name of your USB or FireWire drive brand and model that having problem showing up in Explorer.
Once the correct registry value is determined (for example, \DosDevices\F:), right click on the registry value name, and the select Rename.
Change the drive letter (in the example is F) to another unused drive letter that hasn't been used by another other drives, then press Enter.
Now insert and plug in the USB or FireWire device into the port again (if it's already inserted, take it out and re-insert again). The drive letter for the USB and FireWire should now appear and you can use the drive normally and properly again.
For OS earlier than Windows XP which you have previously change the permissions for the registry key, quit Regedit.exe and start Regedt32.exe, and change the permissions back to the previous setting for Administrators (which should be Read Only).

It's also possible to simply delete the devices registry keys instead of renaming it. Deletion is helpful is users really can't find the the registry value for the drive letter that having problem. But make sure that you do a backup for the registry branch by exporting MountedDevices key, as mistake may cause your system unbootable. The delete all possible USB drives, FireWire drives and external drives which have drive letter temporarily only when inserted in the system, and DO NOT delete any of the fixed hard disk drives or CD/DVD optical drives registry values.
